UFC Vegas 31 rankings update: Islam Makhachev moves to No. 4, Conor McGregor drops to No. 9

The UFC Vegas 31 rankings update has dropped, and lightweight Islam Makhachev moved to No. 4 at 155lbs while Conor McGregor dropped to No. 9. Makhachev was the No. 9 ranked lightweight going into his main event matchup against No. 14 ranked Thiago Moises at last weekend’s UFC Vegas 31 event. After defeating Moises in the fourth round by submission to pick up his eighth straight win, the rankers rewarded the Russian for his long winning streak by bumping him up five spots all the way to No. 4 in the division. With Makhachev moving way up the rankings, someone else had to be bumped down. Tony Ferguson moved down to No. 6, Rafael dos Anjos moved to No. 7, and McGregor dropped all the way to No. 9. There was also a small swap at the bottom of the rankings as Arman Tsarukyan went to No. 14 and Moises fell down to the No. 15 spot.

Fellow UFC fighter Anthony Smith blasted Conor McGregor for making excuses following his loss to Dustin Poirier, saying “we are all injured.” McGregor lost via first-round TKO (doctor stoppage) to Poirier in their trilogy match at UFC 264, and afterwards, it has come out that he had a leg injury heading into the fight. Speaking on Sirius XM’s Fight Nation, Smith was asked about the reports of McGregor being hurt coming into the fight. For Smith, being injured is something that all MMA fighters have to deal with, and he believes that it’s not a valid excuse for McGregor.

In the main event of the pay-per-view card, McGregor and Dustin Poirier had their highly-anticipated trilogy match. Early on, the Irishman had success but “The Diamond” got him down and landed some heavy ground and pound. When McGregor got back up to his feet he threw a steep kick and after that, when he threw a punch his leg broke. According to White, that was due to the fact McGregor has chronic arthritis.

In the wake of the trilogy fight, there have been some suggestions that the UFC could run the fight back for a fourth time because of the bizarre fashion in which it ended. While McGregor was in the cage and awaiting Poirier, he was staying loose throwing punches and kicks. Unfortunately, a security guard was standing in the middle of the Octagon and nearly got kicked in the face.

Poirier defeated McGregor via first-round TKO (doctor stoppage) after the Irishman’s leg shattered and he was unable to continue. Even before the injury led to the finish, however, Poirier was exerting his dominance in the fight as he was beating McGregor both on the feet and on the ground. In fact, two of the three judges scoring the fight cage-side had it 10-8 for Poirier in the first round. Either way, Poirier got his hand raised and now he is up 2-1 over McGregor all-time in the trilogy fight between two of the UFC’s biggest stars.

He went back to his karate style and went back to spinning kicks and a kick-heavy gameplan. However, for the majority of the round, he was on his back after Poirier took him down and landed some ground and pound. Unfortunately, for the Irishman, with just seconds to go, he took a step and snapped his leg causing the fight to be over.
