Khabib Nurmagomedov explains why Conor McGregor’s trash talk proved to be a big mistake in trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier

Harry Kettle - July 14, 2021

Khabib Nurmagomedov has taken the time to explain why he thinks Conor McGregor’s trash talk didn’t work against Dustin Poirier. Last Saturday night at UFC 264, McGregor fell to his second straight loss against Poirier as a result of a broken leg. It came in the wake of a new “strategy” for the Irishman leading into the trilogy, with Conor deciding to revert back to the trash talk status quo that first put him on the map in the UFC.

Adding salt to the wound was the fact that the defeat came in part due to a broken tibia.

Michael Bisping believes Conor McGregor should part ways with John Kavanagh “immediately” following the coaches assessment of UFC 264

Cole Shelton - July 13, 2021

Michael Bisping didn’t like John Kavanagh’s assessment of the first round between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. Early on in the fight, McGregor had some moments. He went back to his karate style and went back to spinning kicks and a kick-heavy gameplan. However, for the majority of the round, he was on his back after Poirier took him down and landed some ground and pound. Unfortunately, for the Irishman, with just seconds to go, he took a step and snapped his leg causing the fight to be over.

Jake Paul claims Conor McGregor "needs Jake Paul more than I need him" after UFC 264 loss

Cole Shelton - July 13, 2021

Jake Paul believes Conor McGregor needs him more than ever after his UFC 264 loss to Dustin Poirier. Paul, who is just 3-0 as a pro boxer, is set to box Tyron Woodley at August 29 in Cleveland, Ohio. It’s an intriguing bout but ever since Paul became a pro boxer he has taken shots at McGregor and said the fight would happen. However, after the Irishman suffered a TKO loss due to a broken leg, Paul says the fight isn’t as big as it could be and McGregor now needs him for the big payday.

Colby Covington believes Conor McGregor's "pride and ego" will keep him in the fight game

Adam D Martin - July 13, 2021

UFC welterweight contender Colby Covington believes Conor McGregor’s “pride and ego” will keep him in the fight game despite his leg injury. McGregor broke his leg against rival Dustin Poirier in the main event of this past weekend’s UFC 264 trilogy fight. The Irishman threw a kick that Poirier blocked with his elbow and as soon as he stepped down on the mat, his leg gave way. McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh said that McGregor was also dealing with an injury in training camp that may have led to the injury. Either way, McGregor is expected to be on the sidelines with the injury for the rest of the year, and given how devastating it was, some believe he may be out longer.

Khabib Nurmagomedov believes “something superior” caused Conor McGregor’s leg to snap at UFC 264

Adam D Martin - July 13, 2021

Former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov believes that “something superior” caused Conor McGregor’s leg to snap at UFC 264. McGregor suffered the injury during his trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier which headlined last Saturday’s UFC 264 pay-per-view event in Las Vegas. The Irishman broke his leg near the end of the first round, which caused him to lose the fight via TKO (doctor stoppage). According to McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh, he had a pre-existing injury that he suffered during training camp that could have led to the injury. But if you ask Nurmagomedov, the reason that McGregor’s leg broke is due to something superior.

Coach Kavanagh believes Conor McGregor was “well on track to getting a finish” at UFC 264

Adam D Martin - July 12, 2021

Coach John Kavanagh believes that Conor McGregor was “well on track to getting a finish” at UFC 264 in his trilogy against Dustin Poirier. McGregor suffered a broken leg at the end of the first round of the Poirier fight, which led to the fight being waved off due to TKO (doctor stoppage). Although McGregor was doing well at the beginning of the fight when it was contested on the feet, as soon as Poirier was able to get the fight to the ground it appeared as though “The Diamond” had the upper hand. Though the end of the fight was ultimately quite disappointing in that it ended with an injury and not a clean knockout, Poirier was still dominating the fight according to the judges, two of who scored the first round 10-8 in favor of Poirier before it was stopped.

Colby Covington reacts to "dirtbag" Dustin Poirier's win over Conor McGregor at UFC 264: "Obviously, it was a fluke"

Adam D Martin - July 12, 2021

UFC welterweight Colby Covington said that “dirtbag” Dustin Poirier’s win over Conor McGregor in the main event of UFC 264 was “a fluke.” Poirier won the trilogy with McGregor on Saturday night at UFC 264 when he got his hand raised via first-round TKO (doctor stoppage) after the Irishman broke his leg near the end of the first round. While it was a strange ending to the fight, it appeared as though Poirier was in control of the match up until the stoppage, and two of the three judges gave him a 10-8 scorecard in the first round. But while Poirier may have been on his way to a win before the injury, the fact the fight ended that way makes some, such as Covington, believe that the end of the fight was more of a fluke than any sort of legitimate win.
