Stipe Miocic weighs-in on Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor boxing match
Prior to Conor McGregor’s highly anticipated rematch with Nate Diaz at UFC 202 back in August, there were talks of the featherweight superstar potentially making the jump to pro boxing to compete with boxing icon Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match. While both sides verbally agreed on the fight, with talks going as far as to lead a Fox Sports 1 talkshow host to announce the date for the fight, ultimately nothing materialized, and McGregor stepped into the Octagon on August 20th to fight Nate Diaz.
Despite that, talks of the pair fighting have never wandered too far from the mouths of fight fans, with Mayweather even stating recently that the door has not closed on the potential fight. In addition, at the UFC 205 press conference several weeks ago, when McGregor was asked what his post-UFC 205 plans were, he stated that he very well could find himself making the jump to boxing to fight Floyd Mayweather.
During a recent episode of ‘Undisputed with Skip Bayless & Shannon Sharpe’ UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic weighed-in on the potential fight, saying:
“You have to go with Floyd, just because that’s what he’s from, that’s what he’s done. He’s one of the pound for pound greatest fighters of all time, but you also got to think…Conor has great confidence when he walks into the Octagon. He thinks he can beat anyone, which is what you need, and it’s a puncher’s chance. It takes one. He hits hard for his size, and anything can happen in a fight.”
Mayweather of course retired from boxing last year after defending the WBA, WBC, The ring, and Lineal, welterweight titles. Since then, there have been talks of ‘TBE’ returning to the ring for another fight, with Conor McGregor being named as the likely opponent. In addition, Mayweather was recently in attendance as Manny Pacquiao took to the ring to fight Jessie Vargas in a ‘comeback’ fight for ‘Pac Man’. Pacquiao won the fight via unanimous decision, adding fuel to the never-ending fires of talks of a potential Mayweather vs. Pacquiao II fight.
Only time will tell if fight fans will ever get to see one of the most famous UFC champions step into the ring with one of boxing’s most famous champions.
