VIDEO | Brian Stann Compares Conor McGregor to Georges St-Pierre
Conor McGregor will go down in history as the first UFC fighter to hold two titles in two weight classes simultaneously. He achieved this incredible feat last night, in the main event of the historic UFC 205, when he stole the lightweight belt from Eddie Alvarez with a beautiful, second round knockout. This lightweight belt will join the featherweight belt on the Irishman’s crowded mantle.
Now that he’s punched his way into the history books, it’s becoming harder and harder to deny that McGregor deserves to be a part of the greatest of all time conversation. While he has not yet achieved the long-term success of legends like Anderson Silva, Georges St-Pierre, Fedor Emelianenko and Jose Aldo, he has broken record after record and defeated a laundry list of dangerous opposition. He’s getting close.
In the buildup to McGregor’s emphatic defeat of Alvarez, former fighter and current FOX Sports analyst Brian Stann discussed some of his qualities on FOX Sports – qualities possessed by many of the sport’s greats. While Stann didn’t go so far as to call McGregor the new Georges St-Pierre, he did note one key similarity between the two: they’re both incredibly diligent when it comes to their time in the gym.
Stann’s words:
“He’s a young man who spends an awful lot of time in the gym. He reminds me of Georges St-Pierre, a guy who is always drilling. Fighters always want to skip the technique and get to sparring and get to grappling. They want to do the fun stuff. Guys like Conor, guys like GSP, they do all the drills, they refine everything, the slightest little nuances of the game. And his timing is just outstanding.”
