Eddie Alvarez & Conor McGregor

This Saturday, UFC lightweight titleholder Eddie Alvarez will defend his belt against a fellow champion in featherweight king Conor McGregor. The two champs will share the main event spot of UFC 205, a card that marks the UFC’s first steps into New York City – one of the final frontiers for mixed martial arts.

Legitimate champion versus champion fights like the one we’ll get this we’ll get this weekend, where no interim titles are involved and both fighter own undisputed titles, are extremely rare in mixed martial arts. Given the rarity of this type of fight, the UFC is flexing all its marketing muscle to hype the UFC 205 main event. Their latest effort to do so is a fantastic promotional video entitled Alvarez vs. McGregor – Champion vs. Champion.

The video shines a light on McGregor’s pre-UFC origins as a Cage Warriors two-division champion, and his 13-second, featherweight-title-winning knockout of former champion Jose Aldo. It also recounts the blistering July knockout that turned Alvarez into a UFC champion.

In addition to its massive main event, UFC 205 will also feature two other title fights. The first will see welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, fresh off a July KO of Robbie Lawler, attempt to defend his title against streaking karate specialist Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. The second will see dominant strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk attempt to defend her title for a fourth time against fellow undefeated Polish star Karolina Kowalkiewicz.

In addition to this trio of title fights, the UFC 205 main card will feature the returns of former champions Chris Weidman and Miesha Tate, who will look to rebound from their title losses against Yoel Romero and Raquel Pennington respectively. The main card will also feature a dynamite welterweight scrap between fan favorite gunslinger Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and TUF 17 winner Kelvin Gastelum. It all  goes down inside Madison Square Garden this Saturday.
