VIDEO | Conor McGregor says Mayweather “should have paid his taxes and stayed retired”
On Monday, ESPN revealed that Mayweather filed a Tax Court petition on July 5. This petition asks the IRS to give him a reprieve until his August 26 mega fight with UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor, which could see both men pocket north of $100 million. The petition also asks for the IRS to reduce the penalty for Mayweather’s tardiness on paying his taxes.
“Although the taxpayer has substantial assets, those assets are restricted and primarily illiquid,” the petition said, according to the legal website Law360. “The taxpayer has a significant liquidity event scheduled in about 60 days from which he intends to pay the balance of the 2015 tax liability due and outstanding.”
In a recent interview with TMZ, McGregor addressed the rumors of Mayweather’s tax troubles.
“That’s gotta sting,” the Irishman said, before assuring he really doesn’t care about the undefeated boxers situation. “I don’t give a fuck what he did, I don’t give a fuck. I don’t care what he’s done. He should have stayed retired. He’s fucked now.”
“He should have paid his taxes and stayed retired and kept my name out of his mouth. “
McGregor, who TMZ caught mid shopping trip, was also asked if he would manage his wealth better than Mayweather.
“How does it look mate, I’m on Rodeo drive, blowing through loads of it,” he joked. “No, I don’t know. I’ll be smart.”
When we last saw McGregor in the Octagon, he authored an artful knockout of Eddie Alvarez to win the UFC lightweight title. Given that he still owned the UFC featherweight title at that time, this made him the first fighter in promotional history to hold titles in two weight classes concurrently. He is 21-3 as a pro mixed martial artist, and 0-0 as a pro boxer.
Mayweather, meanwhile, is a sparkling 49-0 as a pro boxer. After his last fight, a 2013 decision defeat of Andre Berto, the boxing legend elected to hang up the gloves. Yet this lucrative crossover fight with McGregor was apparently enough to pull him back to the ring.
