Ireland’s Conor McGregor is the biggest star the UFC has ever produced. He’s also the first fighter in UFC history to win titles in two weight classes concurrently, and is far and away the highest paid fighter in MMA history. As such, he’s become a source of inspiration for many up and coming fighters.
During a recent question and answer session in Ireland, McGregor was asked by a young fan what advice he would offer to aspiring fighters.
“I’d say work hard, stay focused, believe in yourself, and listen to nobody but yourself,” McGregor told the young man. “That’s it. Kid, if I listened to the amount of times that I’ve been counted out or doubted, I’d lose count. So stay focused, believe in yourself, focus on your craft, and stay positive.”
Strong advice from the Irish superstar, to say the least.
When we last saw Conor McGregor in action, he knocked out Eddie Alvarez to win the UFC lightweight title and make his history as the first simultaneous two-division champ in the UFC. Prior to that title win, he engaged in two unforgettable welterweight battles with Stockton’s Nate Diaz. These wars with Diaz, finally, were preceded by his first UFC title win, which saw him knock out MMA great Jose Aldo in a mere 13 seconds last December.
Today, McGregor is embarking on an open-ended hiatus from the sport, during which time he will father his first child with long time girlfriend Dee Devlin. When he makes his inevitable return to action, McGregor is likely to take on Khabib Nurmagomedov or Tony Ferguson, who will probably fight for the interim lightweight title in the meantime. Of course, it’s also possible that he takes a superfight with welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, or a rematch with one of Diaz or Aldo.
What do you think of McGregor’s advice to this young fan? Sound off, PENN Nation!
