We are nearly halfway through 2017 and we have not seen Conor McGregor fight in the UFC Octagon yet.
Following his historic win at UFC 205, “The Notorious” stated that he would be taking time off for the birth of his first child, which happened this past weekend. With tough negotiations for a boxing match against Floyd Mayweather in the works, many are wondering if we will see the UFC lightweight champion fight at all in 2017.
UFC President Dana White appeared on Sports Centre recently and gave an update on “The Notorious” and what he would like to do in 2017 as the targeted date for Mayweather vs. McGregor was recently taken by Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin.
“I don’t have a targeted date for that now,” White said. “That was the date that we were shooting for provided we could get the deals done and we’re not even that far along in the process. So, I guess I don’t need to worry about the date anymore.”
White was then asked if there is any chance we will see Conor McGregor fight in the Octagon if the boxing match with Floyd Mayweather can’t be arranged this year.
“Conor wants to fight,” White said. “Conor wants to fight Floyd, Conor wants to fight twice this year, so, you know, we’ll just have to see how this thing plays out.”
Conor McGregor last fought in November at UFC 205, winning the UFC lightweight belt by finishing Eddie Alvarez by TKO in the second round. McGregor became the first fighter in UFC history to win and hold two UFC weight class titles simultaneously. McGregor was forced to relinquish one weight class title shortly after UFC 205 and gave up the UFC featherweight title that he won against Jose Aldo at UFC 194.
