Cat Zingano calls for a featherweight tournament, Cris Cyborg responds

This past December the Ultimate Fighting Championship made the exciting announcement that they would be introducing a women’s featherweight division to their lineup.

Then in February, the promotion crowned their first ever women’s 145-pound champion in the form of Germaine de Randamie, who defeated former bantamweight title holder Holly Holm for the inaugural featherweight title via unanimous decision at UFC 208 in Brooklyn.

Following her victory over Holm, it appeared that “GDR” was set to be on a collision course with top 145-pound women’s fighter Cris Cyborg.

Unfortunately for fight fans, de Randamie claimed she would require some time to heal before squaring off with the most feared women’s fighter on the planet (Cyborg). “GDR” cited a lingering hand injury as the culprit and so the division was put on hold.

After a couple of months of waiting, Cris Cyborg got frustrated and demanded that “GDR” accept a fight with her on July 29 in Anaheim.

Sadly, Germaine de Randamie refused to oblige Cris Cyborg’s request for a fight at UFC 214.

Shortly after turning down the July 29 fight with Cyborg, news broke that “GDR” was considering vacating her featherweight title entirely.

With that said, the former Invicta Featherweight queen, Cyborg, began campaigning for a fight with current Invicta featherweight title holder Megan Anderson for the same event.

Anderson was quick to accept Cyborg’s request for a fight at UFC 214, however the promotion has yet to sign the Australian standout.

Most recently, news broke that the UFC was considering matching up Cris Cyborg up with former bantamweight title challenger Cat Zingano for either the vacant or interim featherweight championship, depending on “GDR’s” next move.

While a fight between Cat Zingano and Cris Cyborg would be interesting, fans and analysts have been quick to point out that “Alpha” has gone 0-2 in her past two fights and has not scored a win since September of 2014.

Cat recently took to Twitter where she made the following suggestion for the UFC’s troubled women’s featherweight division.

“Imagine 145lbs tournament to start fw where @criscyborg vs @MeganA_mma fights winner @DandoisCindy vs @CatZingano as #TUF26 coaches. @ufc”

Cyborg, who has definitely earned her chance to fight for UFC featherweight gold, responded to Zingano with the following message.

“I respect Cat! She is wants 2 earn a title shot instead of being given one! She was suppose to be tuf18 coach and deserves the opportunity”
