Cris Cyborg confident Ronda Rousey will not fight her
Next month fight fans will finally see former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey step into the Octagon in a highly anticipated return bout to the Octagon. Rousey of course will be returning from her year-long hiatus to square off against women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes for the UFC women’s bantamweight championship in what will be her first bout since suffering the first loss of her career back at UFC 193 at the hands of Holly Holm.
When it was announced that Rousey would be returning to the Octagon, UFC President Dana White also announced that if Rousey were to win her return fight, she would then have a superfight with Cris Cyborg.
While the report from White certainly got MMA fans excited for the possibility of a superfight between the pair, Rousey revealed in an interview several weeks later that her fight with Nunes would be one of her last fights before retirement, which left fight fans wondering if a superfight with Cyborg would once again fall through.
Cyborg, who recently appeared on Submission Radio, believes that regardless of whether Rousey wins or loses, there’s no way a superfight will happen:
“If she wins or loses her next fight, she’s not going to fight me. I already know. She doesn’t like to challenge herself. If she loses, she’s going to retire. If she wins… she’ll say the same things she said before,”
“I don’t’ think this fight is going to happen. I know Dana said, ‘Ronda wants this fight really bad.’ If she wanted this fight really bad it would have already happened,” said the Brazilian.
“She doesn’t even say my name. Before, she’d all the time say my name, saying she wants to fight me at 135. Now she doesn’t say my name because we’re in the same organization. If she would say my name, this fight would happen,”
“Ronda has run from me for a long time. This is no surprise that she didn’t fight me for her next fight. Of course not; she can not take a punch. She doesn’t have a strong mind.”
The pair would certainly have to clear several hurdles in order to make the fight official given that Rousey has fought exclusively at 135 pounds, and Cyborg is unable to go lower than 140 pounds.
Do you think the fight will ever happen?
