In the main event of UFC 207 Friday evening, UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes made her first successful title defense as she knocked out former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey in just 48 seconds. Nunes landed a big punch just moments into the fight, noticeably leaving Rousey stunned. Nunes followed up the blow by landing several more significant punches, ultimately forcing referee Herb Dean to stop the fight given that Ronda Rousey was out on her feet.

Immediately following the fight, Invicta FC women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg took to Twitter to react to Rousey’s loss:

When UFC President Dana White revealed several months ago that Rousey would be returning at UFC 207, he also stated that if Rousey were to emerge from UFC 207 victorious, she could very well have a highly anticipated superfight with Cyborg. With that being said, Rousey’s team was quick to point out that a fight with Cyborg may not necessarily be the next move, with Rousey’s nutritionist mentioning that a superfight with Joanna Jedrzejczyk could very well be the next move. That, combined with the fact that Rousey was very open about the possibility of retirement nearing, put talks of a fight with Cyborg just out of arms reach for the MMA community.

With Rousey losing in devastating fashion at UFC 207, the general consensus in the MMA community is that the former champ will likely retire, putting a superfight with Cris Cyborg even further out of reach once again.

Cyborg of course recently failed a drug test and has been provisionally suspended while she goes through the process of dealing with the potential USADA anti-doping violation.

So far there has been no word yet on whether or not Cyborg will look to have her ‘B sample’ tested, and appeal the violation.
