Cris Cyborg releases first statement on failed USADA drug test
Big news hit the MMA community on Thursday when the UFC released a statement that they were notified that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) informed Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino of a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation stemming from an out-of-competition sample collection on December 5, 2016.
Cyborg gave a short statement to MMA Fighting following the news of the potential Anti-Doping Policy violation.
“What I can say now is that they are talking to my doctor, and I’m calm,” Cyborg said. “Everybody knows I’m sick, that I’m recovering from the weight cut I had to do for the fight. What is happening is post-weight cut. Everybody knows I’m sick. They are talking to my doctor to solve this the best way.
“It’s nothing bad. I’m on medical treatment.”
Cyborg last competed at UFC Fight Night 95 on September 24 where she defeated Lina Lansberg and a went through a hard weight cut to get down to the 140-pound catchweight.
MMA Fighting also cited that Cyborg’s boyfriend Ray Elbe posted on The Underground that Cyborg did not test positive for a steroid.
“Not for a steroid, and she has a prescription as part of the post fight therapy she’s been receiving due to the severe weight cut,” Elbe wrote. “This has been known for a few days, and Cris doctor has been in direct contact with USADA turning over all the necessary patient files to document the reasons Cris needs the medication.”
Back in December of 2011, shortly after her Strikeforce fight against Hiroko Yamanaka, Cyborg tested positive for the steroid stanozolol and was suspended for one year by the California State Athletic Commission.
