Germaine de Randamie vs. Cris “Cyborg” Justino UFC 214 rumors get shut down
If you’ve had your finger on the pulse of the MMA world today, you’ve likely come across the rumors that featherweight destroyer Cris “Cyborg” Justino would be getting her long-awaited title shot against reigning champion Germaine de Randamie at UFC 214 this July 29, in Anaheim, California.
While Cyborg has made no secret of the fact that this is the fight she wants – and the location she wants it to occur in – these rumors are a bit premature.
Shortly after they surfaced, they were deflated by ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, who spoke to De Randamie’s manager Brian Butler. Butler assured Okamoto that there is “no truth” to these rumors of a Cyborg vs. De Randamie title fight at UFC 214.
This of course, is in keeping with BJPenn.com’s previous reports that the UFC is having a difficult time booking this fight for the July card. It is this diminishing likelihood of a UFC 214 title shot that recently drove Cyborg to concede that she would be willing to accept a non-title fight – ideally with reigning Invicta champ Megan Anderson – in order to earn a place on the Anaheim card.
Whatever happens with this much discussed De Randamie vs. Cyborg fight, Cyborg is growing increasingly frustrated with the UFC’s inability to get her a fight. The seemingly unstoppable fighter even recently suggested that she might ask to be released from her UFC contract if the UFC fails to get her another fight in a timely manner.
When we last saw Cyborg in action, she mauled the game Lina Lansberg to a second-round TKO in a 140-pound catchweight fight. Prior to that, she debuted in the UFC with a lopsided destruction of Leslie Smith. De Randamie, meanwhile, was last seen in the Octagon in the main event of UFC 208, when she became the UFC’s inaugural women’s featherweight champ with a hotly debated decision defeat of Holly Holm.
Do you think Cris “Cyborg” Justino will get the title shot she deserves at UFC 214? Sound off, PENN Nation!
