Cris Cyborg captured the UFC’s vacant women’s featherweight title at last month’s UFC 214 event in Anaheim, defeating a very game Tonya Evinger via third-round TKO. The most feared women’s fighter on the planet now has her eyes set on former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm.

It has been said time and time again that in the sport of mixed martial arts, you experience the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. UFC 214 displayed just that, especially in the main event light heavyweight title fight between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones. Cormier went into the title fight rematch as the champion while Jones came in the challenger after coming off a year suspension after testing positive for banned substances.

Cris Cyborg is finally a UFC champion. After years of waiting, the Brazilian bomber got her chance to fight for the vacant UFC women’s featherweight title opposite Tonya Evinger in one of three title fights on Saturday’s UFC 214 bill. Cyborg won her title with a third-round TKO. From here, it’s difficult to say what might be next for Cyborg, as the UFC women’s featherweight division is notoriously short on talent. While Megan Anderson – Cyborg’s originally planned UFC 214 opponent – seems like an option, however, Cyborg herself is interested in a scrap with former women’s bantamweight champ Holly Holm.

A women’s featherweight title fight took place on tonight’s UFC 214 main card as top contender Cris Cyborg took on Tonya Evinger for the promotions vacant title. Round one begins and Cyborg presses forward and throws a left. Another left from Justino appears to rock Evinger. Cyborg rushes in with a combination. Evinger eats the blows and pulls guard. Cyborg stands up and motions Evinger to do the same. Cyborg immediately presses forward. She lands a couple of right hands and then a knee. Evinger circles out. Cyborg catches her with a hard low kick. Cristiane presses forward. Evinger ducks under a strike and shoots in for a takedown. She presses Cyborg against the fence. She scores the takedown but Cris is back up. Evinger still stays on her and scores a nice trip takedown. Cris shoots back up to her feet and lands a hard knee. Evinger circles out. She appears to accidently poke Cyborg in the eye. We break as the referee gives Cris time to recover. We restart after a long break and Cyborg quickly presses forward with an inside leg kick. Tonya fires a leg kick off of her own. They fighters clinch a Cris lands a knee. Evinger attempts to press the fight against the cage. Cris misses with a takedown. Tonya circles off the fence. Cyborg with a combination. She lands a knee and then another set of shots. Tonya circles out but eats another right hand. Cris with a follow up knee and the horn sounds to end round one.

Former Invicta FC women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg has had a very long, and tumultuous journey with the UFC. After finally being signed to the promotion last year, Cyborg competed at catchweight twice, before then being suspended by USADA for taking a pill to help her rehydrate. After being cleared of all wrongdoing by USADA, the stars finally aligned for the WMMA veteran to fight for the vacant women’s featherweight title. After Cyborg’s title fight was announced UFC President Dana White publicly stated that the UFC had made some mistakes in regards to how they handled Cyborg’s fights, and that they owed it to her to get her a title fight.

This Saturday, the UFC will touch down in Anaheim, California with UFC 214. This massive card will be anchored by three anticipated title fights. The first of these three title fights will occur in the women’s featherweight division, where destructive Brazilian striker Cris “Cyborg” Justino will battle Tonya Evinger for the vacant throne. With this anticipated fight now less than a week away, Cyborg has concluded the most physical parts of her camp. On Sunday afternoon, the Brazilian star shared footage of her final sparring session to YouTube, and if this footage is to believed, she’s deadlier than ever. While a Cyborg victory is certainly not a sure thing, many fans expect her to win this fight and kickstart her long-awaited reign as UFC featherweight queen. The UFC women’s featherweight division division, of course, is extremely thin on talent. As such, it’s hard to imagine who might be next for the winner of Cyborg and Evinger. Yet while there aren’t a ton of interesting options to pick from, Cyborg does have one interesting idea: former UFC women’s bantamweight queen Holly Holm.

Germaine de Randamie may no longer be the UFC women’s featherweight champion, however her feud with the UFC is still an extremely controversial one. After winning the belt earlier this year, it appeared as though the stars had aligned for Germaine de Randamie to defend her title against Cris Cyborg. De Randamie refused to fight Cyborg, explaining that the former Invicta FC champ is a “proven cheater” in regards to her drug testing history. While Cyborg’s team, and many others, held out hope for a GDR-Cyborg fight, de-Randamie was ultimately stripped of the title by the UFC, and Cris Cyborg was booked to fight Megan Anderson.

When Cris Cyborg made her UFC debut in May of 2016, she did so at 140 pounds in a catchweight fight against Leslie Smith. At that time, the UFC had yet to create a women’s featherweight division, and Cyborg was adamant that she wouldn’t be able to make the bantamweight limit of 135 pounds. After running through Smith in under 90 seconds, Cyborg then fought Lina Lansberg in a highly anticipated showdown in Brazil. On the heels of Cyborg going 2-0 inside the Octagon, the UFC announced that they were creating a women’s featherweight division. Unfortunately for Cyborg, at that time she was suspended by USADA as a result of a pill she took to help her recover from the brutal weight cut leading up to the Lansberg fight.

Back in February, Germaine de Randamie scored a narrow decision over Holly Holm to become the UFC’s first-ever women’s featherweight champion. The expectation from there was that she would attempt to defend her title against the division’s consensus best fighter, Cris “Cyborg” Justino. Unfortunately, de Randamie went radio silent for some time, and ultimately refused to fight Cyborg outright, calling the Brazilian star a cheater and saying she didn’t belong the UFC.

Earlier today, we learned that Cris “Cyborg” Justino and Megan Anderson will collide for undisputed UFC women’s featherweight gold in the co-main event of UFC 214 in Anaheim, California this July 29. This news immediately raised question about the status of Germaine de Randamie, who won the undisputed women’s featherweight title with a controversial decision defeat of Holly Holm back in February. De Randamie, as many speculated, has been stripped of the undisputed featherweight title so that this Cyborg-Anderson fight could be made possible. The promotion stripped the Dutch fighter of her title after she refused to fight Cyborg.

Arguably the biggest story to emerge from the UFC athletes retreat earlier this month surrounds a dramatic clash between UFC featherweight star Cris “Cyborg” Justino and UFC strawweight Angela Magana. This drama was sparked when Magana made some nasty comments about Cyborg online, and reached a violent crescendo when a vengeful Cyborg punched Magana in the face at the athletes retreat. In the wake of this incident, Magana has elected to press charges against Cyborg, and the UFC claims to be taking Cyborg’s punch very seriously.
