Cris “Cyborg” Justino has not since September of 2016. This, however, is not for lack of trying. Over the last few months, the destructive featherweight star has been ceaselessly campaigning for a fight.
Cyborg’s first choice was a scrap with reigning featherweight champ Germaine De Randamie, who she was keen to fight at UFC 214 in Anaheim. When this bout began to look unlikely, however, Cyborg shifted her attention to reigning Invicta featherweight queen Megan Anderson, who she said she’d like to fight on the same card.
Earlier this year, on an episode of The MMA Hour, Anderson agreed to this UFC 214 fight, which seemed to make it a very real possibility.
“I’ve always expressed interest in taking the next step up to the UFC,” Anderson said on the show. “We haven’t been approached about doing that, so I think really it’s on them to come to us and say ‘hey let’s start negotiating.’ I feel like this is the fight that should have happened and I think now’s the time. If Germaine isn’t going to be able to do it, let’s crown the people’s champ.”
“I don’t need any more time. I’m fine for July 29,” Anderson added later. “Let’s do it.”
While Cyborg and Anderson both appear to be into this fight, the UFC, for whatever reason, does not. The promotion has made little movement in the direction of this featherweight showdown. Instead, there have even been rumors that Cyborg will fight former bantamweight title challenger Cat Zingano at UFC 214.
On Saturday night, at the UFC Athletes Retreat in Las Vegas, Cyborg and Anderson crossed paths, and squared off for a photo. Cyborg posted this photo to her official Twitter account, imploring the UFC to book the fight, as Anderson is a real 145-pound fighter, and just the kind of opponent the fans want to see her fight.
Ran into @MeganA_mma in #lasvegas and she told me #anytime #anywhere @seanshelby people want to see me fight a REAL 145lber in the @ufc pic.twitter.com/dmO3DUl5y5
