The UFC is currently going through a bit of a break, but the promotion’s jam-packed 2020 calendar will soon be underway, starting with events like UFC 246 and UFC Raleigh. While UFC 246 is generating more attention than any other upcoming UFC card, due to the return of Conor McGregor, UFC Raleigh is definitely a card to keep an eye on.

Curtis Blaydes is scheduled to return to the Octagon in the main event of UFC Raleigh, where he’ll take on former UFC heavyweight champ Junior dos Santos. If Blaydes wins this fight, he’ll be well positioned for a title shot opposite the winner of a yet unscheduled heavyweight title fight between reigning champion Stipe Miocic and former champion Daniel Cormier. Given his position in the heavyweight rankings, Blaydes will be watching this Miocic vs. Cormier fight — which will mark the pair’s third meeting — very closely. And when the cage door closes, he expects the reigning champion Miocic to come out on top.

The UFC’s recently-announced January 25 stop in Raleigh, North Carolina, now has a main event. According to a report from ESPN, the card will be topped by a heavyweight tilt between Junior dos Santos and Curtis Blaydes. This report, which cites “multiple sources,” clarifies that contracts for the fight are not yet signed, but that both men have agreed to the bout. Junior dos Santos, who is the former UFC heavyweight champion, currently holds the No. 4 spot in the division’s rankings.

Last night, reports surfaced suggesting that a long-discussed heavyweight title fight between reigning champ Daniel Cormier and WWE star Brock Lesnar is off the table. The reason, these reports stated, is that the pro wrestling export Lesnar has decided he’s done with mixed martial arts. Heavyweight contender Curtis Blaydes isn’t happy to hear this. There hasn’t been a heavyweight title fight since November of 2018, when Cormier defended his title in a short-notice showdown with Derrick Lewis. Granted, that’s partly due to Cormier’s lingering injuries, but it’s also due the uncertainty surrounding this potential Lesnar vs. Cormier fight. Therein lies the issue for Curtis Blaydes.

The rising heavyweight contender completed seven takedowns in his fight with Willis, carrying his UFC total to a whopping 40. This is now the record for the most takedowns completed by any heavyweight in UFC history.
