We’ve only seen the ‘Axe Murderer’, Wanderlei Silva step foot in the cage once in the last five years. That time being for when he headlined Bellator’s big Madison Square Garden show, Bellator 180 opposite his longtime rival, Chael Sonnen. ‘The American Gangster’ would go on to earn the unanimous decision victory by grinding out Silva in his usual fashion and then enter into Bellator’s heavyweight Grand Prix title tournament where he would defeat Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson in the opening round.

While at the UFC Gym Huntington Beach grand opening, UFC Gym President Adam Sedlack went on camera to discuss the importance of staying active as you age. His only error was using former Pride champion and long-time UFC contender Dan Henderson as an example. Mid-way through his comments, Sedlack was interrupted by a jarring Henderson overhand – the legendary “H-Bomb” – which sent him careening to the mat.

In the years since then, its been hard not to wonder what might have happened if the two light heavyweight legends had fought as planned. On Sunday night, we got our answer – sort of.

Interestingly enough, this isn’t the first time that the pair have been set to compete against one another. Back in 2012, Jones and Henderson were set to meet in the Octagon at UFC 151 for a highly anticipated light heavyweight title fight, where Henderson hoped to capture the elusive UFC championship belt.

On this week’s episode of The MMA Hour, three-time UFC title challenger and recent Bellator MMA signee Chael Sonnen made an impromptu call-in to break a bit of combat sports news. Speaking to host Ariel Helwani, the legendary MMA mouthpiece announced the main and co-main events of a Submission Underground show scheduled for December 11. The co-main event of this show, Sonnen announced, will pit top-ranked female bantamweight Miesha Tate against a former opponent in Jessica “Evil” Eye. The co-main event, meanwhile, will pit troubled light heavyweight GOAT Jon Jones with recently retired MMA legend Dan Henderson. These eight-minute grappling matches will occur under Eddie Bravo Invitational Rules. The event will occur at the Roseland Theatre in Portland, Oregon, and stream live on FloCombat.com.

Earlier this month at UFC 204, UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping, and MMA legend Dan Henderson stepped into the Octagon in a highly anticipated rematch, this time for Bisping’s UFC middleweight championship. The fight was an extremely spectacular one, with Henderson showing off the power he possesses in his right hand even at 46 years old as he dropped Bisping in both the first and second rounds. Ultimately however, Bisping was able to weather an early storm from Henderson as he continued to outwork the MMA legend throughout the course of the remaining 3 rounds, out-striking Henderson as he poured out an impressive volume of strikes.

The bout also marked the Brit’s opportunity to avenge the ugliest loss of his career: a blistering KO doled out by Henderson in the year 2009. In the end, Bisping would leave Manchester with both the belt and his vengeance, earning a unanimous decision over his 46-year-old foe after five fun rounds of action. The fight was so competitive, however, that many fans didn’t believe Bisping deserved either, and that instead, the decision should have gone to Henderson.

Michael “The Count” Bisping was able to get his revenge over Dan Henderson at UFC 204. To make it even sweeter, Bisping was able to defend his UFC middleweight title in his much-wanted rematch with “Hendo” after being on the receiving end of a highlight knockout suffered in their first meeting at UFC 100. However, the rematch was not as decisive as their first fight as the championship bout went to the judges after five rounds where Bisping was declared the winner by unanimous decision.

He did so against an old nemesis in Michael Bisping, with the UFC middleweight crown on the line. Despite a spirited effort, Henderson would come up short on the scorecards, failing to win the belt as he did in his two previous UFC title shots. Though he was never able to win gold in the UFC, Henderson accomplished some incredible feats over the course of his 47-fight career, winning titles in other major promotions, engaging in unforgettable wars, and dishing out some of the most iconic knockouts in MMA history.

Leading up to Dan Henderson and Michael Bisping’s UFC 204 showdown on October 8th, Bisping has taken the offensive in the war of words between the two men. When the pair first fought at UFC 100, they did so after coaching opposite one another on ‘The Ultimate Fighter: Team USA vs. Team UK’. At the time, Dan Henderson was granted a Testosterone Use Exemption (TUE) and was allowed to do Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT). While Henderson never failed a drug test, and his usage of TRT was completely legal in the eyes of the NSAC at the time, Michael Bisping recently questioned whether or not Henderson actually needed the treatment given that after it was banned Henderson continued to fight, going as far as to call the Pride FC legend a ‘cheater’.

MMA legend Dan Henderson has a chance to retire at the top of the game as he is set to face UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping for the belt at UFC 204 on October 8. Prior to his last bout where “Hendo” knocked out Hector Lombard in the second round of their fight, Henderson had already begun talks of retirement. The UFC 199 bout against Lombard was the last fight to fulfill his UFC contract.
