Dana White: Canelo-GGG fight stole planned date for Mayweather vs. McGregor
With no major mixed martial arts events occurring over the weekend, Saturday night’s anticipated Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. boxing match dominated the attention of the combat sports world. While the fight, which culminated in a blowout decision win for Canelo, was an interesting watch, the biggest headline the evening produced occured after the fight, when it was announced that Canelo will finally meet fellow star Gennady Golovkin – more widely known as GGG – on September 16 in Las Vegas.
This fight is one of the biggest and most important that can currently be made in boxing. The only fight that can really be argued to be bigger, of course, is the much discussed, but yet unofficial boxing match between UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor, and recently un-retired boxing star Floyd Mayweather.
Apparently, however, the fruition of this long awaited Canelo vs. GGG bout is actually a bit of a hinderance to Mayweather and McGregor’s potential mega fight. At least, that’s the case according to UFC President Dana White.
Speaking to Fight Hub TV shortly after the announcement of Canelo vs. GGG, White explained that Mayweather’s possible fight with McGregor was also being targeted for a September 16 date at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena.
“We just lost our date to Canelo and Triple-G, but good, that’s a good fight. I’ll be at that one too,” White said.
White also gave his thoughts on this newly announced GGG vs. Canelo fight:
“Canelo looked good tonight, Canelo looked awesome. Triple-G’s fun man, he’s the type of guy boxing needs, so it will be a fun fight. So is Canelo, Canelo went at it tonight. The fans win that fight. That’s gonna be a real fight. That’s gonna be a fun one.”
