Dana White details his plans for UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway

Max Holloway (18-3 MMA) became the UFC’s undisputed featherweight champion at last month’s UFC 212 pay-per-view event in Brazil by defeating former division kingpin Jose Aldo via third-round TKO.

The win served as the Hawaiian’s eleventh victory in a row and tenth career finish.

Since defeating Jose Aldo on June 3 in Rio de Janeiro, many fans have been wondering who will be the next man to challenge Max Holloway for his strap.

Top division contenders Frankie Edgar and Cub Swanson have both stated their desires to face “Blessed” next, but prior to this weekend the promotion had given no hints as to which fighter would get the nod.

This weekend fans got that answer, which turns out to be “The Answer”, as UFC President told KHON-2 that Max Holloway’s first title defense would come against Frankie Edgar later this year.

“We’re looking at Frankie Edgar, but we don’t know where.” White stated. “Absolutely. (it will happen before the end of the year)”.

Frankie Edgar (22-5-1 MMA) was last seen in action at May’s UFC 211 payer-per-view event in Dallas where he scored a second-round TKO victory over surging division contender Yair Rodriguez.

Prior to his victory over “El Pantera”, Edgar defeated Jeremy Stephens via unanimous decision at November’s UFC 205 pay-per-view event in New York.

Max Holloway is hoping that his first featherweight title defense can come in his home state of Hawaii.

“I’ve got two former champs under my belt. It’d be nice adding another one under my belt. We’ll see what happens, you know, first thing’s first, I got to have that meeting and we’ll go from there. If they want to do it, let’s do it in Hawaii. I know a place, a stadium, it’s very nice.”

With that said, UFC President Dana White is still reluctant to book a UFC event in Hawaii.

“Listen, Max Holloway doesn’t want us to come to Hawaii as much as my people do. Believe me, everyone wants to go work on UFC Hawaii. I don’t know, we’ll see. Where would we hold it? It rains every ten minutes there (Aloha Stadium).”
