Dana White gives update on Georges St-Pierre return
While it has been nearly five years since former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre stepped into the Octagon for his final fight, a welterweight title defense against Johny Hendricks, headlines regarding a potential Georges St-Pierre return have continued to surface.
Most recently, all signs pointed to the former champ returning to the Octagon last year after reports began to surface that negotiations with the UFC had been going well after he and UFC President Dana White buried the hatchet. Unfortunately, while it looked as though St-Pierre would be returning to the Octagon to fight middleweight champion Michael Bisping, the former champ took to social media to release a statement on why he would be unable to fight Bisping, saying:
“Nothing would make me more happy in the world to fight you in Toronto, Michael. Last week I met with Ari, and I made peace with Dana [White]. I tried to resolve things, but unfortunately, right now it’s not happening. Hopefully, things will change soon. Thank you”
While fight fans were taken off guard by the sudden bad news, reports began to emerge that St-Pierre’s deal with Under Armour and the UFC’s conflicting deal with Reebok were the reason the former champ wouldn’t be returning to the Octagon.
Now, ahead of UFC 208 tonight, UFC President Dana White gave an update on St-Pierre’s potential return to TSN, saying:
“We’re where we always were with GSP. We’ve been talking,” White said. “We’ve been talking to GSP for, God, over a year now. Me and GSP got everything straight between us. I don’t know. We’ll see what happens.”
Only time will tell if the UFC and St-Pierre are able to reach an agreement that sees the former welterweight champ return to the Octagon.
Stay tuned for updates as they become available.
