Dana White on questionable May-Mac trash talk: I don’t know if you can cross a line
Over the course of their four-day, four-city press tour, Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor generated countless headlines. Unfortunately, a great many of those headlines were rooted in the controversial comments they made to one another, as McGregor was criticized for comments that were perceived as racist, and Mayweather found himself under fire for homophobic comments. Yet according to UFC President Dana White, who was on site during these press events, it’s possible that no lines were crossed.
“What’s going on here is as much of a fight as the fight itself,” White told MMAjunkie prior to to the final press event in London. “Mayweather has yet to meet his match physically, or verbally, in these type of situations – until now. These guys are two of the best to ever do it. To say you cross a line leading up to a fight? They’re going to try to knock each other unconscious in about a month and a half. So, I don’t know if you can actually cross a line in this business.”
While it’s unlikely that many people are going to agree with White on this stance, there is no denying that Mayweather and McGregor’s chaotic press conference did a great deal to boost the hype and visibility of their August 26 showdown.
“Obviously it’s already a very huge fight,” White said. “It’s a global fight. The world cares about this fight. Vegas had this thing at 4.9 million buys (on the) over-under. Tickets go on sale (July) 24. Once tickets go on sale, that’s when this thing will really start tracking and we’ll have an idea of what the numbers look like.”
With their press tour wrapped up, Mayweather and McGregor now return to their training. On August 26, they’ll collide inside Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena, and no matter the outcome, make each other even more wealthy than they already are.
