Dana White talks Georges St-Pierre’s future following cancellation of fight

Early in 2017, it was announced that former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre would be returning to the Octagon for a highly anticipated showdown with UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping. While no date was given for the bout, the UFC held a press conference for the scrap, pending an official fight date.

Ultimately, Bisping got fed up waiting for the former welterweight champ, and informed Georges St-Pierre that if he wasn’t prepared to fight in July, he would give the middleweight title shot to Yoel Romero. St-Pierre fired back with a video of his own, informing the champ that he would be ready to fight any time after October.

Ultimately, the UFC opted to cancel the bout, and give Yoel Romero the title shot against Michael Bisping instead. Now, UFC President Dana White has stated that the fight may not be permanently off.

He spoke during a media scrum:

“GSP and Bisping isn’t happening,” Dana White said during a media scrum. “GSP’s not going to be ready until November, and we’ve got to move on.”

” … (But) if Bisping goes in and fights Yoel soon and wins the fight, then maybe we could do the (St-Pierre) fight,” White said. “But if Bisping doesn’t win, I think St-Pierre goes to 170.”

In regards to his relationship with St-Pierre, which has been admittedly rocky over the years, White emphasized that he and St-Pierre are still on good terms after the situation. This year, St-Pierre and White had a meeting that ultimately saw the pair leave the meeting on good terms, after quite some time of butting heads publicly.

“I’m fine with GSP,” he said. “Yeah, we’re good.”

Only time will tell if the UFC, St-Pierre, and Bisping, are able to reach a deal that sees this fight get made.
