Dana White on Travis Browne: “I think that Travis should retire”

Last night, on the final fight of the UFC 213 undercard, Travis Browne attempted to correct a three-fight losing streak against the dangerous Alexey Oleinik. Though Browne had a few moments of success early on, this fight ultimately turned out disastrously for him, as he was stopped by a second-round rear-naked choke.

With this outcome, Browne falls onto a four-fight skid, having recently been defeated by Cain Velasquez, Fabricio Werdum, Derrick Lewis and Oleinik. This unfortunate skid has led many fans and pundits to speculate that it might be time for the towering Hawaiian heavyweight to hang up the gloves.

As it turns out, UFC President Dana White shares this sentiment.

“It’s crazy,” White said of Browne at the UFC 213 post-fight press conference. “Travis Browne was one of those guys. Right before [Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva fight] – even the Bigfoot fight, he got injured, he blew his hamstring or something weird happened to him in that fight – the guy looked like he was going to be a world champion. This is one of those sports. You never know. One moment you’re absolutely unbeatable and unstoppable, and the next minute you can’t win a fight.”

When asked outright whether he though Browne should retire, White did not hold back:

“I think that Travis should retire.” 

White is not wrong about Browne’s former reputation. For a time, he looked like a surefire contender for the UFC heavyweight crown, as he scored massive knockout wins over names like Gabriel Gonzaga, Alistair Overeem, and Josh Barnett. Ultimately, however, his career began to go off the rails. He is 2-6 in his last 8 fights, with his only wins coming against Brendan Schaub and Matt Mitrione, neither of whom is in the UFC anymore. His overall record stands at 18-7-1.

Travis Browne is currently engaged to marry UFC superstar Ronda Rousey.
