The UFC has been crowning a lot of interim champions of late. In fact, it crowned two new interim champions at UFC 236 last weekend, as Dustin Poirier defeated Max Holloway to win the interim lightweight title, and Israel Adesanya defeated Kelvin Gastelum to win the interim middleweight title. Unfortunately, these interim title belts often amount to little more than number one contender belts, guaranteeing the interim a champion a shot at the true, undisputed champion. Sometimes, they don’t even accomplish that — see the cases of Colby Covington and Tony Ferguson.

With this victory, Adesanya can now look forward to a title-unifying showdown with undisputed champion Robert Whittaker — but that’s not the only big fight on the horizon for him. Over the last few days, Israel Adesanya has been trading barbs with UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. So much so that there is already some buzz for a potential fight between them.

Over the last few weeks, there has been ample reason to believe we might soon see Daniel Cormier defend the UFC heavyweight strap against former champ and long-time WWE star Brock Lesnar. First, it was reported that the matchup could occur at UFC 241 this summer. Then, Lesnar surrendered his WWE title at WrestleMania 35, seemingly clearing a major hurdle blocking his move to the UFC. Speaking at the UFC’s Seasonal Press Conference on Friday afternoon, however, UFC President Dana White gave a grim update on this potential Daniel Cormier vs. Brock Lesnar fight.
