Daniel Cormier begs Jon Jones to “stay out of trouble”
On July 29th, at UFC 214, former UFC light heavyweight kingpin Jon Jones will step into the Octagon with light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier for a highly anticipated rematch 2 years in the making. While Jones and Cormier have been slated to fight on numerous occasions, they have stepped into the Octagon together just once, in 2015, when Jones defeated Cormier via unanimous decision, handing Cormier the first loss of his professional career.
Ahead of the rematch on July 29th, Daniel Cormier appeared on SportsCenter to discuss the rematch, pleading for Jones to “stay out of trouble” long enough to make it to the fight:
“Jon, seven weeks to just stay out of trouble. Come to Anaheim, get beat, and I could care less what you do after. Just seven weeks, stay on the straight and narrow for seven weeks so we can do what we were supposed to do since the end of 2015. He beat me in January of 2015, I was going to fight Ryan Bader in New Orleans in June, and then I was going to get another rematch against Jon towards the end of 2015, we’ve been scheduled 5 times now we’ve only competed once.”
In regards to his legacy going into the fight, and what a rematch with Jones means for his career, Cormier stated:
“[This means] Everything. This is the one I wanted, this is the one I’ve worked for. I’ve done everything else. I’ve been the UFC champion for two years now, I was the Strikeforce champion, won regional titles, everything. I’ve only lost to one guy. So I need to beat that one guy, and then my legacy – I feel – is complete.”
Only time will tell if Cormier is able to avenge the one and only loss to his career on July 29th.
