Daniel Cormier Fires Back at Alexander Gustafsson for his Callout of Luke Rockhold
UFC light heavyweight champion, Daniel Cormier and Alexander Gustafsson are no strangers to one another. The two men met in one of the 205-pound weight classes greatest fights at UFC 192. The bout would go the distance and it would be Cormier who came out on top with the split decision victory and his first career title defense.
Since the two fought, they haven’t lost. Cormier has gone 3-0 while Gustafsson 2-0. Cormier just recently defended his title against Volkan Oezdemir at UFC 220 and his longtime friend and teammate, Luke Rockhold just very recently attempted to recapture some gold of his own at UFC 221. However, Rockhold was unable to come away with the win and prior to this fight, he had talked about going up to the 205-pound division. A statement that prompted a warning from Gustafsson.
Something that Cormier had something to say about on Wednesday:
Nice timing Alexander(kick him while he’s down huh). I got a better idea tho he doesn’t fight you next. He fights Robert Whitaker, I mean sometimes that happens right. You lose your way into a title shot! #thegustafsonway

Fans will always have comments to throw in and Cormier decided to give some rebuttals after his initial tweet:
It was tough because I fought him that way. I could have made the whole fight look like round 1. Think about this tho. He lost a 5 round stand up fight to me. By the end of the fight he was the one wrestling lol https://t.co/peOEGKEyq6

Fan: DC you barley beat Alex.. i love you but don’t talk like you beat the living hell out of him.. i recall he did knock you down.. Luke is all talk and he knocked out by a 41 year old.. up next is either Yoel or Kelvin.

2015 was big year for me. With the way I won belt all the fake champ claims I felt I had to prove something. Had to do it better than Jones. Do something to try and clear the shadow a bit. So I fought him like that. We fight again tho he’s on his back whole fight https://t.co/Jn1DX69Lo5

When Luke Rockhold actually decides to make the move on up to light heavyweight is still to be determined, but he has said it will happen. A fight with Gustafsson certainly would be one that would garner fand interest and something that could make sense while Cormier battles with the heavyweight champion, Stipe Miocic in the Summer.
