Daniel Cormier gives transparent shoutout to his pick for MMA GOAT
UFC 216 is set to take place this weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada. Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee are featured in the main event of the evening as they will fight for the UFC interim lightweight title.
In the co-main event of the evening, there is a chance history will be made by the current number 1 UFC ranked pound-for-pound fighter, Demetrious Johnson. “Mighty Mouse” will look to defend his UFC flyweight title for the 11th time against Ray Borg. Johnson is currently tied with former middleweight champion Anderson Silva for most consecutive title defenses in UFC history at 10 a piece and Johnson will look to set the new record on Saturday night.
On Thursday, UFC light heavyweight champion reposted a photo of Johnson and had the following short and concise message in the caption: G.O.A.T.
For those that may not understand the acronym, GOAT stands for the “greatest of all time.” While there will be many who will make an argument for other fighters to hold the title of the greatest in history, it’s clear where Cormier stands at the moment.
Interestingly, Cormier’s biggest rival, Jon Jones may be one of those who people might argue to hold the title as the GOAT of MMA. Many were quick to put Jones back up there on their list after UFC 214 fight where Jones became the first man to knockout and finish Cormier in his professional mixed martial arts career. However, that was all disrupted when USADA flagged Jones for a potential anti-doping violation, testing positive for the steroid Turinabol from his UFC 214 weigh-in sample. Jones is currently going through the due process of his potential violation and no sanctions have been imposed as of yet. Jones had just come off a one-year suspension to fight Cormier at UFC 214 after testing positive for the banned substances clomiphene and letrozole, which resulted in the cancellation of Cormier and Jones’ scheduled UFC 200 fight in 2016.
Who do you consider the GOAT of mixed martial arts? Let’s take this one to the comments!
