Daniel Cormier Is Still Optimistic That Georges St-Pierre Could Fight at UFC 206
Earlier this month, it was announced that UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier will defend his title against Anthony “Rumble” Johnson at UFC 206. The card is scheduled for December 10 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Unsurprisingly, this news went over very well with Canadian fight fans. It’s unlikely, however, that fans in The Great White North will be completely satisfied with UFC 206 if it doesn’t feature the comeback of Georges St-Pierre.
St. Pierre, who hails from the Canadian province of Quebec, is far and away the greatest welterweight in the history of the sport – if not the greatest fighter in MMA history outright. Unfortunately for Canadian fans, he has spent the last three years on the shelf, enjoying an open-ended hiatus from the sport.
Recently, however, the Canadian great has expressed interest in a return to action. And just like the throngs of fight fans in Canada, Cormier is hoping St-Pierre’s return will occur at UFC 206.
“My friend Georges from Montreal, where they speak French as they do down in Louisiana,” Cormier said in his best French accent on Monday’s episode of The MMA Hour. “My French brother, GSP. Get on this fight card man, let’s make money together. Card placement means nothing. I will be a co-main event to Georges St-Pierre. I’ll fight in the main card opener if you need me to to. It doesn’t matter. Let’s get Georges St-Pierre on the fight card.”
Unfortunately for Cormier, the possibility of St-Pierre’s returning to action at UFC 206 is looking less and less likely. Despite this fading likelihood, however, the light heavyweight champ still believes it could happen.
“Honestly I had a conversation with Georges about what was stopping the deal from being made,” he told Ariel Helwani on the show. “It did not seem like that big an issue for who he is and what he brings. If it’s an issue of money, the amount that he told me, that should not be a deal-breaker.”
Do you think Georges St. Pierre and the UFC can reach an agreement in time for UFC 206? Sound off, PENN nation!
