Daniel Cormier: Jon and I are better than the Chuck Liddells and the Tito Ortizes have ever been
UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and former champion Jon Jones are scheduled to fight once again at UFC 214, which takes place on July 29 in Anaheim, California.
Talking about his matchup against Jones with Colin Cowherd, Cormier said that he feels everyone will see a less dominant Jon Jones in this matchup with coming off a suspension for banned substances. Although Cormier believes Jones will not perform as impressively as he did in his fights in the past, he still believes that “Bones” is one of the greatest fighters to ever step into the Octagon.
Let’s forget about the old guys,” Cormier said on The Herd (at 6:06 of the video, transcribed by Bloody elbow). “The old guys were good, they were great. (But) you’re watching the two best fighters in the light heavyweight division’s history because nobody in the past can beat Jon or I. So you’re watching the two best.”
Cormier went on to compare the evolution of fighters in mixed martial arts to basketball players in the NBA.
“It’s the same with basketball and everything,” he continued. “We’ve got to let go of our childhood and understand that people can be better. And Jon and I are better than the Chuck Liddells and the Tito Ortizes have ever been. We’re more skilled, the game changes. And I watch you every morning make this case for LeBron James. LeBron James is a better basketball player than Michael Jordan.”
