Daniel Cormier and Josh Thomson argue over how the UFC is handling coronavirus pandemic

Daniel Cormier and Josh Thomson, teammates at American Kickboxing Academy, argued on social media over the UFC’s handling of the coronavirus outbreak. The UFC is the only major sports league who is still holding its events while the rest of the sporting world has gone into lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. Even Bellator, who currently employs Thomson, postponed its recent Bellator 241 event. The UFC, meanwhile, decided to go ahead with its card in Brasilia, which led to a little spat between Cormier and Thomson on Twitter.

Daniel Cormier sees some similarities between Israel Adesanya’s underwhelming UFC 248 win over Yoel Romero and Anderson Silva’s slow 2010 win over Demian Maia in Abu Dhabi. Cormier compared the two fights during a conversation with Rich Eisen, though he misremembered the setting of the Silva vs. Maia fight as Saudi Arabia.

The official UFC rankings have been updated after last Saturday’s UFC 248 card, and in a fairly surprising twist, not much has changed. That’s probably because UFC 248 featured precisely zero ranked fighters outside the main and co-main events. That being said, the updated UFC rankings do feature some interesting changes. Most notably, Weili Zhang has surpassed Valentina Shevchenko on the women’s pound-for-pound list on the strength of her UFC 248 defeat of Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Daniel Cormier has also finally been removed from the UFC light heavyweight rankings, clearing the path for a host of other light heavyweights to move up.

Daniel Cormier feels proud of being recognized for testing clean for over 50 United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) tests. The former heavyweight champion, Cormier has been honored today by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) after 50 of his tests have come back negative. Holly Holm was recently honored for accomplishing 50 clean tests. However, UFC VP of Athlete Health and Performance Jeff Novitzky revealed the Cormier was in fact first and has now surpassed the 54 test mark. Novitzky praised DC for his commitment to fighting clean and fair.

Cormier won the first fight, in July of 2018, by first-round knockout, claiming the heavyweight title for himself. Miocic won the rematch, in August of 2019, by fourth-round TKO to reclaim the belt.

Daniel Cormier and Stipe Miocic are currently 1-1 across two previous fights, and the expectation is that they’ll meet in a tie-breaking trilogy fight in the near future. The date for this trilogy fight, however, is still a mystery. Speaking to MMA Junkie, Cormier shed a bit of light on the timeframe for this fight. He believes that, as the UFC’s calendar for the first quarter of 2020 is filling up, there might not be time for his tie-breaker with Miocic until at least June.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez has decided to hang up the gloves and pursue a pro wrestling career with WWE. Daniel Cormier, his long-time training partner and another former UFC champ, is sad to see Velasquez go, but is simultaneously very happy for him. “It’s a sad day when Cain Velasquez retires. But I know that he is doing something that he loves,” Cormier told MMA Fighting recently. “I remember watching him at [WWE] Elimination Chamber and you can see that this was something that he could love, I am not sure he ever fell for something faster, well except for when he met [his wife] Michelle.”
