Yet as that date rapidly approaches, there’s been question as to whether he might delay his retirement to accommodate big ticket fights with names like Jon Jones, Brock Lesnar and Stipe Miocic. That’s what UFC President Dana White is hoping, and from the sounds of it, he might just get his wish.

He knew there would be an opening when the Russian legend engaged, and practiced extensively to make sure he’d be ready for it.

The UFC had a very difficult time locking down a main event for the UFC 230 card in New York City in early November. Eventually, however, the promotion convinced UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier to make a short notice title defense against fearsome knockout artist Derrick Lewis on the card. Daniel Cormier has never hid the fact that the UFC made it well worth his while to step in and fight Lewis in the short-notice UFC 230 main event.

The online sportsbook Bovada has updated the odds for this potential trilogy fight after Jones’ UFC 232 defeat of Alexander Gustafsson, and Jones has been pegged as a -265 betting favorite over his arch rival. This means that a successful bet of $265 on Jones would win you $100. Cormier, meanwhile, is now a +205 underdog, meaning a successful $100 bet on him would earn you $205.

In this latest edition of the rankings, new UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is still ranked behind his rival Daniel — a man he’s beaten before — on the pound-for-pound list. After this impressive stoppage victory, in his post fight interview with long-time UFC commentator Joe Rogan, Jones addressed the much discussed possibility of a third fight with his arch nemesis, former two division champion Daniel Cormier.

He would just be stripped of the belt once the fight began.
