UFC light heavyweight champ Daniel Cormier’s incredible UFC 226 knockout defeat of Stipe Miocic, which earned him the UFC heavyweight title, generated reactions from a host of MMA stars. One fighter in particular, however, was quite quiet in the immediate fallout of Cormier’s big win: his arch rival, Jon Jones. In the days since Cormier’s incredible win, Jones has made a few comments on social media, but none have addressed Cormier directly. According to Jones’ manager Malki Kawa, however, Jones had plenty to say behind closed doors.

Last night, in the main event of the stacked UFC 226 card, UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier knocked out Stipe Miocic to capture the UFC heavyweight title. With this outcome, Cormier made history as one of just two men to wear gold in two UFC divisions concurrently — the other being Conor McGregor. Having realized this lofty goal, Cormier now plans to fight once or twice more before hanging up the gloves in March of 2019, just before his 40th birthday.

Lesnar, the former champ and a current WWE star, then lumbered into the cage, where a heated confrontation ensued. There was trash talk, machismo, even a few shoves. While this heated, in-cage encounter will serve as a gold mine when the UFC is assembling promotional material for Cormier and Lesnar’s controversial title fight, it generated some significant criticism from the fans. Many onlookers felt it was a little too far removed from the bushido code of the martial arts, and a little too close to the testosterone-infused world of pro wrestling.

Daniel Cormier shocked the mixed martial arts world tonight in Las Vegas by knocking out Stipe Miocic in the very first-round to claim the UFC’s coveted heavyweight title. Cormier was able to catch Miocic with a big right hand that sent the Cleveland native crashing to the canvas. From there, Cormier would deliver some brutal ground and pound that eventually put Stipe to sleep.

Tonight’s UFC 226 event delivered some great fights, fantastic finishes and the return of Brock Lesnar. Despite a terribly disappointing co-main event bout between Derrick Lewis and Francis Ngannou, tonight’s pay-per-view showcased some promotional history as Daniel Cormier was able to become the second “champ champ” in UFC history by knocking out Stipe Miocic in the main event.

This weekend, in the main event of UFC 226, UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic will attempt to defend his title against UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier. It’s an irrefutable superfight, and one that the UFC apparently mentioned to Miocic before his last fight, a unanimous decision defeat of Francis Ngannou at UFC 220. Speaking at a UFC 226 media lunch this week, Miocic divulged that the UFC called him two days before his high-stakes battle with Ngannou to discuss a potential fight Cormier, who defended his title against Volkan Oezdemir on the same card. They also mentioned his coaching The Ultimate Fighter against Cormier.

UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier has typically been very complimentary of his UFC 226 opponent, UFC heavyweight champ Stipe Miocic. That, of course, doesn’t mean Cormier doesn’t have any criticisms of his UFC 226 foe. Speaking at the UFC 226 open workouts this week, Cormier offered a critique of Miocic’s last win: a unanimous decision defeat of fearsome puncher Francis Ngannou at UFC 220. Cormier feels that, if he had spent 20-plus minutes on top of Ngannou, as Miocic did, he would have found multiple opportunities to finish him.
