The other is Conor McGregor. Perhaps more importantly than this historic feat, however, is the fact that the win over Miocic cemented Cormier as one of the greatest fighters in MMA history — in any weight class, in any promotion.

Specifically, Cormier is interested in defending his light heavyweight belt against former champion and MMA legend Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. Shogun, of course, is scheduled for a fight with the extremely dangerous Anthony Smith this weekend, yet Cormier didn’t mention Smith’s name. Initially, Smith was pretty disappointed with the way Cormier ignored him, but now, he feels as though Cormier has added to the stakes of his fight with Shogun

That said, Lesnar isn’t likely to be available until at least January, which has Cormier considering a light heavyweight title defense in the meantime — against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. “Maybe I’ll go fight Shogun, that would be good,” Cormier said on a recent episode of Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show. “I am serious, maybe I will go fight Shogun. It was the ever-lasting shadow of the bad boy former UFC light heavyweight champion, Jon Jones that everyone who consumed the UFC seemed to love and forgive no matter what. For the fans, there was nothing that Jones could do that would turn them away and through it all, his bitter rival stood across from him. That rival, Daniel Cormier, was a former Olympic medalist, a collegiate champion wrestler, a former Strikeforce heavyweight champion, and the only one standing in his way of the UFC light heavyweight championship was Jones.

When Cormier defeated Miocic and set his sights on a heavyweight money fight with Brock Lesnar, he ensured that Gustafsson will have to go even longer before he gets a crack at the light heavyweight title. It probably goes without saying, but Gustafsson is not happy about this. Although he’s currently scheduled for a UFC 227 fight with Volkan Oezdemir, Gustafsson feels that, if Cormier plans on staying at heavyweight for some time, he should vacate the light heavyweight title. At the very least, he thinks his UFC 227 clash with Oezdemir should be deemed an interim title fight.
