This bit of trash talk served as the spark for yet another fiery social media exchange between the two, which occurred on both Twitter and Instagram. Thanks to an unfortunate series of events, however, that title now belongs firmly to UFC 214, which goes down on July 29 in Anaheim California. This card will feature a whopping three title fights. The first will go down at featherweight, where Cris “Cyborg” Justino will collide with Tonya Evinger for the vacant throne. The second will occur at welterweight, where champ Tyron Woodley will attempt to defend his title against crafty grappling whiz Demian. The third, and biggest by a mile, will occur at light heavyweight, where champion Daniel Cormier will take on his fiercest rival – and the only man he’s lost to – Jon Jones.

How did Conor McGregor, a mixed martial arts guy – he has no boxing experience – get the attention of the pound-for-pound number one fighter in the world, and maybe the best boxer of all-time? How did he do that?”

On July 29th, at UFC 214, former UFC light heavyweight kingpin Jon Jones will step into the Octagon with light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier for a highly anticipated rematch 2 years in the making. While Jones and Cormier have been slated to fight on numerous occasions, they have stepped into the Octagon together just once, in 2015, when Jones defeated Cormier via unanimous decision, handing Cormier the first loss of his professional career. Ahead of the rematch on July 29th, Daniel Cormier appeared on SportsCenter to discuss the rematch, pleading for Jones to “stay out of trouble” long enough to make it to the fight:

Over the last few weeks, UFC President Dana White has been pushing UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson to accept a fight with a slimmed down former bantamweight champion in TJ Dillashaw. Johnson, however, has some real reservations. He believes the next flyweight title shot should go to the established Ray Borg, and is reluctant to take any huge risks for the UFC President, who he recently divulged hasn’t treated him especially well. During a Wednesday night appearance on UFC Tonight, UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier weighed in on this complicated UFC-Johnson-Dillashaw debacle. In his opinion, if the UFC wants to make this Johnson-Dillashaw happen they need to make it worth the flyweight champ’s while. Cormier believes a one million dollar payday should be enough in that regard.

In April of 2016, Jones returned from a similar layoff. Though he was originally expected to challenge Cormier for gold in this 2016 return to action, a last-minute Cormier injury meant he instead battled late-replacement Ovince St. Preux for interim gold.

Prior to UFC 210 last month, UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier caught quite a bit of controversy for his early weigh-in on Friday morning. Cormier stepped onto the scale and missed weight on his first attempt, weighing in above the light heavyweight title fight limit of 205 pounds. Just over a minute later, Cormier reemerged from backstage, and stepped on the scale to weigh in once again. This time, Cormier pressed his hands down on the privacy towel, offsetting his weight so as to weigh-in at 205 without actually having to cut the weight.

UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and former champion Jon Jones are set to rematch in the Octagon at UFC 214 on July 29 in Anaheim, California. The two rivals first met at UFC 182 back in 2015 when Jones was the champion. Cormier came in as an undefeated challenger and after the end of the five-round fight, Jones was awarded a judge’s unanimous decision.

Back in 2014, Jones and Cormier appeared onstage together at the UFC 178 media day. While the pair were simply supposed to have a staredown, the two men engaged in a now infamous brawl which saw UFC exec Dave Sholler thrown through the backdrop.
