Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier have been scheduled to fight 4 times now. Despite that, the pair have only actually ended up fighting once. When they met inside the Octagon, Jones won the fight in convincing fashion, defeating Cormier via unanimous decision. In the wake of their cancelled UFC 200 bout, Cormier knows he needs a break from Jones. The way the champ tells it, their rivalry has made him an “ugly” person.

Fortunately, former UFC middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva stepped in on just two days notice to fight Cormier in a 3 round main-card fight. While Cormier was criticized for what many perceived to be ‘playing it safe’, the light heavyweight champ revealed on The MMA Hour this week that he actually went as far as to take a pay cut for the fight because of his desire to fight:

With just two days to go until the biggest event in UFC history, Daniel Cormier found himself without an opponent for the main event of UFC 200 after Jon Jones was pulled from the card for a potential USADA anti-doping violation. Ultimately, former middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva stepped in on just 2 days notice to fight the light heavyweight champ in a 3 round main card scrap. Unfortunately for Cormier, while he had an opponent for the event, his pay was cut because he was no longer the main event of the card.

With just two days to go until UFC 200, many were wondering if the UFC would be able to find UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier a replacement opponent on such short notice. While Gegard Mousasi and Michael Bisping both were quick to offer to step in and fight the light heavyweight champ, there had been no word on whether or not the UFC would be able to iron out all the details in just 48 hours.

Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier were initially slated to have their highly anticipated rematch at UFC 197 on April 23rd in what was Jones’ first fight back in the Octagon since being stripped of his light heavyweight championship. Cormier pulled out of the fight with a knee injury, and was ultimately replaced by Ovince St-Preux on short notice. The fight became an interim light heavyweight championship fight, with the winner set to face Daniel Cormier for the undisputed light heavyweight championship.

Jones’ team initially appealed the referee selection, however they ignored his concerns and moved forward with McCarthy as the referee for the bout.
