Former UFC flyweight champion Henry Cejudo isn’t impressed by the division’s new champion Deiveson Figueiredo, and thinks his championship reign will end against Askar Askarov. Cejudo last fought at UFC 249 in May when he took on Dominick Cruz. He won by TKO in the second round against the 135-pound legend and finished the bout with a surprising message. From the Octagon, he announced his decision to retire from MMA and subsequently vacate his bantamweight title.

On UFC Fight Island in Abu Dhabi last weekend, Deiveson Figueiredo earned the flyweight with a win over Joseph Benavidez. He already headed back to his home turf of Brazil on Sunday afternoon accompanied by his new UFC belt. Figueiredo and Benavidez first fought back in February, where it was Figueiredo who won by second-round knockout. However the Brazilian missed weight, so he didn’t claim the flyweight belt.

According to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, bantamweight contender Cody Garbrandt may be interested in dropping down to flyweight in order to challenge Deiveson Figueiredo for the 125-pound title. “No Love” has been on quite the journey throughout his first five years in the UFC, starting off with a 6-0 run that saw him capture the Bantamweight Championship. Figueiredo won the vacant flyweight belt when he dominated Joseph Benavidez in the main event of UFC Fight Island 2. After knocking Benavidez down three times and then nearly finishing the fight three times with rear-naked chokes, he finally was able to get the RNC late in the first when he choked Benavidez out cold in an incredible title-winning victory.

Figueiredo and Benavidez were squaring off for a second time, this after their first encounter for the promotions vacant flyweight title had ended in somewhat controversial fashion. In their first meeting, the flyweights appeared to clash heads which opened up a cut on the head of ‘Joe-Jitsu’ and shortly after the Brazilian in Figueiredo was able to finish the fight.

Alexandre Pantoja will be the backup fighter for when Deiveson Figueiredo meets Joseph Benavidez in a rematch for the vacant flyweight belt on Fight Island. Just in case something happens to either Figueiredo or to Benavidez, the UFC has now tabbed a backup fighter just in case a disaster scenario happens. That person will be Pantoja, the No. 4 ranked flyweight on the UFC roster. According to AG Fight, Pantoja will serve as the backup for the main event between Figueiredo and Benavidez. Pantoja is already scheduled to compete on the same Fight Island card against Askar Askarov, but he will fill in for the vacant title fight in case either fighter has to withdraw from the bout.

Figueiredo and Benavidez first met in late February, shortly after Henry Cejudo was stripped of the UFC flyweight title after moving up to bantamweight. The objective of the matchup was to crown a new ruler of the division.
