Demetrious Johnson discusses possible fights with Conor McGregor and Chael Sonnen
Last night, in the main event of UFC on Fox 24, UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson – known by the ring name “Mighty Mouse” – made a whopping 10th straight defense of his title. He did so with a third-round, arm bar induced submission defeat of BJJ blackbelt Wilson Reis – an incredible feat in its own right. With this win, Johnson tied Anderson Silva’s record for the most consecutive title defenses in UFC history, and solidified his status as the best fighter currently competing in mixed martial arts.
While Johnson’s dominance has been incredibly impressive, it has also created some unique problems for the UFC’s matchmaking team. The flyweight star has bushwhacked his entire division, leaving almost nothing in the way of deserving title challengers in his wake. As such, it’s going to be a real challenge for the UFC to find a deserving opponent for his next fight.
Addressing the media post-fight, Johnson had a little fun when discussing possibilities for his fighting future, calling current Bellator light heavyweight Chael Sonnen and UFC lightweight champ Conor McGregor some of his dream opponents for his next fight– simply because either fight would make him rich.
“[My dream opponent] would be Chael Sonnen, because he will sell the hell out of the pay-per-view,” Johnson said at the event’s press conference (via MMAFighting.com). “Or Conor McGregor. Nowadays everybody is talking about big money fights, right? Big money fights. Truly, I am not afraid of one man in this whole UFC Octagon roster. I truly don’t care. What’s the worst thing that’s going to happen to me? I lose. I get knocked out?”
The champ continued:
“Dude, I will f***ing fight Conor McGregor for the biggest payday of my life. If I get knocked out, perfect. Thanks, Conor. You weigh 170 pounds, but guess what? I’m going to be laughing all the way to the bank.”
Given that neither of these options seems especially likely, who do you think Demetrious Johnson should fight next? Sound off, PENN Nation!
