TJ Dillashaw Vows To Defend Both Belts After Beating Demetrious Johnson for His Legacy
Demetrious Johnson fighting TJ Dillashaw could be the biggest fight in 2018 and while Johnson has been quiet about the match-up, UFC bantamweight champ Dillashaw will not let it the idea of it fade away. He’s been training for it already for months now and is determined to take everything the ‘Mighty’ flyweight belt holder has earned throughout his record-breaking career. Now he’s gone on record saying if he beats Johnson, he’ll defend both the titles, throwing a little shade at ‘Champ Champ’ Conor McGregor.
“This is a way to put a stamp on my legacy. I was a little hurt losing that split decision [to Dominick Cruz] and not being on a 13-fight win streak and being called the pound-for-pound best in the world. In my mind, I should be No. 1. So it comes down to beating Demetrious Johnson to prove I’m the best, and it’s a huge thing for my legacy to be the double champ in two weight classes. I’m not a Conor McGregor. I’m going to be active defending my belts. I’m not afraid to fight.”

“They always talk about Demetrious Johnson and what record he’s about to break. They always talk about Demetrious Johnson and the win streak he’s on or Demetrious Johnson being No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world. But they’re never talking about Demetrious Johnson and who he’s fighting, Now he has a chance to lose, and that’s a scary thing for him. I am that person. I’m that person that’s going to bring that threat. You’re going to be glued to the TV because for once you don’t know what’s going to happen. I want to prove a point. He insulted me saying I couldn’t make the weight, that I wasn’t worthy of a 125-pound title shot and he knows that I was.” — TJ Dillashaw speaking to FloCombat.
TJ Dillashaw fighting Joseph Benavidez? Sign us up. Although, this is all just talk until the fight actually gets made. Even if everything goes to plan, the big question would be if the UFC would actually let Dillashaw defend both belts. It would be the first time in UFC history a simultaneous champ defended a belt. Hopefully the fight will get booked and we’ll get to see whoever the best man is to come out on top. Either way, either winner will put the UFC in a strange position. TJ Dillashaw would be a two-belt champion in McGregor territory, while Johnson would still be at 125lbs with a win over the champ at 135lbs. …What would be next?
