Derrick Lewis vs. Mark Hunt bout targeted as UFC Fight Night 110 headliner

Shortly after his come from behind, knockout defeat of Travis Browne, streaking heavyweight contender Derrick Lewis made a bold callout of brick-fisted heavyweight veteran Mark Hunt. It sounds as though he will get his wish. According to a report from MMAJunkie.com, a Lewis vs. Hunt bout is being targeted as the headliner for the UFC’s upcoming trip to Auckland, North Island, New Zealand. The promotion’s New Zealand return is scheduled for June 11 in New Zealand, and June 10 on North American soil (due to the time difference).

Earlier this month, in the main event of the UFC’s latest trip to Halifax, Nova Scotia, monstrous heavyweight Derrick Lewis braved a bit of early adversity to pound the dangerous Travis Browne to a second-round KO. With this win, the Texas based destroyer set himself up for some massive potential fights in the UFC heavyweight division, any number of which would push him right to the cusp of a title shot. On Monday’s edition of the MMA Hour, Lewis discussed the options for his next fight with host Ariel Helwani. During this segment, he addressed widespread interest in a fight with fellow contender Francis Ngannou, who recently dazzled with a veritable execution of former champ Andrei Arlovski. Lewis explained that if this is the fight he’s offered, he’ll take it, because he knows it’s one the fans want.

UFC heavyweight Derrick Lewis looks to have reached a new level of stardom following his win over Travis Browne at UFC Fight Night 105 in Halifax, Canada, which took place this past weekend. “The Black Beast” threw some additional verbal shots at Browne after knocking him out in the second round of their main event fight, bringing up Browne’s alleged history of domestic violence. Lewis took it a step even further and gave a shout out to Browne’s current girlfriend, former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey. Lewis did not stop at the post-fight Octagon interview. He kept up with his shots at Browne in the post-fight interview with the press and has posted quite a few social media posts aimed directly at Browne and Rousey.

With this win, which is arguably the biggest of his career, Lewis extended his win-streak to six, and established himself as a bona fide heavyweight contender. Unfortunately, Lewis’ fight with Browne also produced a small bit of controversy, as referee Mario Yamasaki was quite late in stopping the fight, which gave Lewis time to hit Browne with a few extra sledgehammers.

Last Sunday, in the main event of the UFC’s latest trip to Halifax, Derrick Lewis weathered an early bit of adversity to club Travis Browne into unconsciousness with a right hand and a series of ground strikes. In the wake of this thunderous win, Lewis criticized Browne for the allegations of domestic abuse that linger in his past, and made comments about Browne’s current girlfriend, UFC superstar Ronda Rousey. “Where Ronda Rousey’s fine ass at?” he said.

Back in June 2015, UFC heavyweight Travis Browne’s ex-wife Jenna Renee Webb took to Instagram to share photos of her bruised body. She suggested these bruises were dealt by Browne, and shortly thereafter, announced that she was considering pressing charges against him. As a result of this grim development, the UFC temporarily shelved Browne, and barred him from that year’s International Fight Week events. After an independent investigation, however, the organization decided their was insufficient evidence against Browne, and opted to reinstate him.

Last night, the UFC touched down in snow covered Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada for a second time. In the evening’s main event, streaking heavyweight contender Derrick Lewis faced arguably the biggest test of his already impressive career in towering Hawaiian Travis “Hapa” Browne. In the early moments of this fight, it looked like it could be a tough night for Lewis, as Browne appeared to hurt him repeatedly with spear-like kicks to the body. Though Lewis’ kryptonite might have been exposed by these body kicks, he ultimately survive the first round. Once the second began, the complexion of the fight changed dramatically.

Following that, Browne dropped a UFC 200 TKO loss to Cain Velasquez, which was followed by a unanimous decision loss to Fabricio Werdum at UFC 203.

Earlier this month, the UFC touched down in Albany New York with UFC Fight Night 102. In the main event, rising heavyweight Derrick Lewis took on Dagestani prospect Shamil Abdurakhimov. Though Lewis didn’t exactly dazzle in this fight, he was ultimately able to put Abdurakhimov away with a fourth-round TKO. In the wake of this win, Lewis was incredibly critical of his own performance, telling Octagon-side commentator Jon Anik that it was one of the “terriblest” fights of his career. When asked by Anik who he would like to fight next, Lewis explained that he had plans to call out Travis Browne or Mark Hunt, but wasn’t sure if this was the right move given his less-than-stellar performance.

UFC books two key heavyweight tilts for early 2017

The first quarter of 2017 will be a big stretch for the heavyweight division, as the UFC has pencilled two huge heavyweight scraps onto the calendar. These fights will see the division’s two best prospects take big steps up in competition against well established names. The first of these heavyweight showdowns will occur on January 28, at UFC on Fox 23, when French-Cameroonian destroyer Francis Ngannou gets the biggest test of his career in former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski. The second will occur just weeks later, when massive Texan Derrick Lewis faces what could be his biggest test in fringe contender Travis Browne. Lewis and Browne will duke it out on February 11, at UFC 208 in Brooklyn.
