Dominick Cruz explains why Demetrious Johnson would have problems at bantamweight

UFC flyweight kingpin Demetrious Johnson tied Anderson Silva for the most title defenses in UFC history (10) last night in Kansas City by scoring a dominant submission victory over Wilson Reis in the evenings main event.

“Mighty Mouse” has essentially cleaned out the entire 125-pound division, defeating some of the divisions top contenders on multiple occasions.

Johnson has offered to return to the promotions bantamweight division for a super-fight, this if the UFC is willing to hand him over a seven-figure payday.

The last time “Mighty Mouse” fought at 135-pounds was against Dominick Cruz for the promotions bantamweight title at ‘UFC on Versus 6’ in October of 2011.

Cruz was able to defeat Johnson via unanimous decision that night in Washington, with the judges scoring the fight 50-45, 49-46 and 50-45 in favor of “The Dominator”.

Following Johnson’s dominant submission victory over Reis at last night’s UFC on FOX 24 event, Cruz spoke about the possibility of “Mighty Mouse” returning to bantamweight and why the current 125-pound kingpin would likely struggle against the top five guys at 135-pounds.

“At 125 [pounds], I can’t see too many people [challenging him],” Cruz said during the FOX UFC Fight Night post fight show (as transcribed by Damon Martin of FOX Sports). “At featherweight, everybody at the top five is hard, everybody at 135 [pounds] in the top five is hard to beat, especially for somebody that small. I mean I fought him and the size difference is a problem. If I move up to 145 or 155, size is a problem.”

He continued:

“So that is a big deal in these fights, especially when you’re our size from 145 and down, weight matters. I think it’d be very difficult.”
