Believe it or not, elite level bantamweights, Dominick Cruz and TJ Dillashaw haven’t always been the best of friends. But you would never have guessed that just by looking at their bloopers from their recent Toyo Tires commercial.
Former bantamweight king and divisional great, Cruz and current champion, Dillashaw were bitter rivals circa late 2015 in the build-up to their epic title clash.
Cruz was the returning former champion who lost his title due to injuries. In his absence, Dillashaw took over when he defeated the interim champ turned undisputed champ, Renan Barao following Cruz’ stripping.
Dillashaw would defend the title twice against Barao and Joe Soto before taking on the returning Cruz who had only fought once in the previous four years.
The fight was an instant classic between the two and a showcase of the highest level skills MMA had to offer.
After five hard-fought and competitive rounds, it would be the legend of the lighter weight classes, Cruz who reclaimed his throne.
Going their separate ways since the 2016 encounter, Cruz would defend once against longtime rival, Urijah Faber before taking only the second loss of his 24 fight career to the rising, Cody Garbrandt.
For Dillashaw, he would go through top contenders, Raphael Assuncao and John Lineker before getting another crack at the title and when he did he made the best of it by knocking out Garbrandt in the second round of their UFC 217 meeting.
Now Dillashaw and Garbrandt are set to rematch for the belt at the upcoming UFC 227 card on August 4th. Cruz, on the other hand, is recovering from a broken arm that he suffered in preparation for a would be clash with Jimmie Rivera at UFC 219.
Expected to return sometime this year, Cruz is hopeful to get right back into the title picture where he and Dillashaw could possibly face off once again. With the animosity seemingly at a low point between the two, it could surely pick right back up if a rematch ever materializes.
