Donald Cerrone is launching an amateur fight series
Donald Cerrone — better known as “Cowboy” — is one of the most beloved fighters in the UFC. His newest side project is only going to boost his reputation among the fans and his fellow fighters.
In a Tuesday night Instagram post, Cowboy announced plans to launch an amateur fight series called Cowboy Fight Series. These events, Cowboy explains, will give amateur fighters a platform on which to grow their skills and their reputations, and in some cases, earn professional contracts with top regional promotions. Cowboy will also invite some of these amateurs to live with him on the BMF ranch, where they’ll have the opportunity to train and develop amongst some of the sport’s very best fighters.

“11 years ago the Mask, Skrape and Punkass from the Tapout crew found me fighting on the regional scene and helped me get an opportunity with the WEC, which opened the doors to my UFC career,” Cowboy said in his post. “Now it’s my turn to find the next big thing. Cowboy Fight Series will give amateur fighters the opportunity to earn professional fight contracts with top regional promotions, in addition to living and training at he BMF Ranch with top level professionals. Formal press release coming in the next few weeks but this will change the game!”
Cowboy last fought in June, when he battled England’s Leon Edwards to a hard-fought unanimous decision loss. With this outcome, he returned to the loss column after a first-round knockout of gritty Hawaiian star Yancy Medeiros. Cowboy’s next most recent fights were all losses, as he was knocked out by Darren Till, defeated by Robbie Lawler via decision, and knocked out by Jorge Masvidal. In the wake of this relatively tough run at welterweight, he’s hinted that he plans to return to the lightweight division, where he once competed for the title.
