Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone’s first social media post after losing to Jorge Masvidal
Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone’s streak at welterweight came to a halt on Saturday night when he met Jorge Masvidal in the Octagon at UFC on FOX 23.
Cerrone, who went into the fight riding a 4-fight winning streak since moving up from the lightweight division to the welterweight division was ranked at #5 in the official UFC rankings while Masvidal stepped into the Octagon ranked #12.
The two welterweights slugged it out in a competitive start to the first round in the co-main event of the evening but a bit of confusion came at the end of the round when Masvidal dropped Cerrone and hurt him bad with a right hand and followed up with some nasty ground and pound just as the bell rang, ending the first round. Some thought referee Herb Dean had called an end to the fight but Dean clarified that he signaled it was the end of the round.
It seemed Cerrone didn’t have enough time to recover in between rounds as Masvidal attacked early in the second round and managed to drop “Cowboy” again. Cerrone managed to get back to his feet where Masvidal poured on the pressure and was able to get a TKO stoppage.
Cerrone took to social media on Sunday, posting a photo of he and his grandmother walking backstage after the fight. Cerrone captioned his photo with lyrics from the 1960’s song, “The Weight,” by The Band. Cerrone, was pictured with his arm over his grandmother’s shoulder had the following caption:
“Take a load off Fannie
Take a load for free
Take a load off Anny
And you put the load right on me…”
Cerrone is known for his close relationship with his grandmother as he spent his time with his grandparents in Colorado, growing up as an adolescent.
Unfortunately, for Cerrone, the fight back home in Denver was a bump in the road and was not the outcome that he was looking for but will surely be looking to get back and turn things around in his next competition.
As for Masvidal, the win over Cerrone will surely shoot him up in the rankings, getting him closer to his goal of fighting for the title.
What do you think will be next for Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone? Will a fight back at lightweight be the right move or should he continue his journey at welterweight? Let’s hear in the comment section what you think Cerrone should do next.
