After knockout of Matt Brown, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone wants Demian Maia
Last night, on the main card of an action-packed UFC 206, fan favorite Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone dazzled with a thunderous third-round knockout of the notoriously durable Matt Brown. With this win, Cowboy improved to a fantastic 4-0 as a welterweight.
Given his current streak, and the fact that he is now ranked well inside the welterweight top-10, Cowboy is ready to set his sights on the division’s uppermost players. On that note, the streaking welterweight revealed post-fight that he has his eyes on one potential opponent in particular: decorated grappling whiz Demian Maia.
“It doesn’t matter at all,” a nonchalant Cerrone told Fox Sports after his defeat of Brown. “If I had to pick one [opponent], I’d want Demian Maia cause he’s on the way to the title fight but if I had to hurry up and choose someone for Denver [on January 28], it’s whoever they want to give me. That doesn’t matter to me at all. Staying busy, staying fun, that’s what I love,” Cerrone said.
Maia, of course, is currently on an incredible streak, including wins over game opposition like Gunnar Nelson, Matt Brown, and most recently Carlos Condit. Under normal conditions, his streak would have probably earned him a title shot by now. Unfortunately for him, that title shot has been put on hold by champ Tyron Woodley’s recent draw with Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson, which will probably result in a rematch. If Maia opts to stay busy rather than wait for a shot at the winner of Woodley and Thompson’s rematch, a scrap with Cowboy would be a great way to do so.
If Maia isn’t interested in taking a non-title fight, however, Cowboy has a backup plan: a fight with Jorge Masvidal, who recently called him out after a bizarre win over Jake Ellenberger.
“Hopefully, I get back here and they have a contract waiting for me. If it’s [Jorge] Masvidal, f*ckin’ A. If it’s someone else, even better, let’s go.”
