In the main event of this action-packed broadcast, long-time UFC welterweight contender Donald Cerrone picked up a knockout win over Yancy Medeiros, rebounding from a three-fight losing streak in the process. In the co-main event, meanwhile, Texas’ own Derrick Lewis burst back into heavyweight title contention with a stoppage win over Poland’s Marcin Tybura. Elsewhere on this action-packed card, we saw big wins from James Vick, Curtis Millender, and Sage Northcutt – though the latter was quite controversial.

Last night, in the main event of the UFC’s anticipated return to Austin, Texas, Donald Cerrone rebounded from a three-fight losing streak with a destructive, first-round stoppage of Yancy Medeiros. While this impressive win served to keep Cerrone ranked at welterweight, he admitted post-fight that he plans to return to his former haunts in the lightweight division, where he hopes to make one last run at the title. In particular, Cerrone seems hellbent on a fight with Dagestan’s Khabib Nurmagomedov, who will battle Tony Ferguson for the title at UFC 223 this April 7. Cerrone and Nurmagomedov, to remind, have plenty of history together, having been booked to fight twice in the past to no avail.

He recently opened up about the terrifying road to fight day in an interview that produced chills, but in it spoke about how the old Cowboy is back. A revelation that led to him sticking to welterweight and fighting the very game Yancy Medeiros. The cut is just too big and Cowboy loves the fight game too much. So much in fact, that he wants to step inside the Octagon four times this year. “[I plant to fight] four [times in 2018]. Who knows? If they call me and say they need me to fight next week, I will. I love it, I literally love my job. […] I think I did a good job branding myself young in this sport. But other than that, those young guys, you can’t just have one fight in the UFC and think, ‘Oh man, I’m going to sign a huge deal.’ It doesn’t work like that. Just like I can’t say, ‘I’m going to fight Floyd Mayweather and make $100 million.’ The opportunity isn’t there for me – you’ve got to take it when you can get it.”

After a long career at lightweight and an unsuccessful title show, Cowboy Cerrone made the jump up to welterweight. He rattled off a four-fight win streak before coming short against Jorge Masvidal and Robbie Lawler. His last lost at welterweight was against a guy he claimed he didn’t even know until he accepted the fight. However, he shares with Brendan Schaub and Bryan Callen that he knows who Darren Till is now. He also revealed that after his latest bumpy ride at welterweight, he’s going back to lightweight. “I have a very clear of who Darren f-cking Till is now. […] I’m going back to [lightweight]. I’m going back to ’55. It was [a tough cut], but I’m only 175, I’ve been waking up at 175 every day, so I was like, pffft, I’m fine. I’m more focused. At ’70 I can just not train and f-ck off. After Frankie Edgar had to pull out of UFC 218 due to a injured orbital, there was a crazy storm of fighters trying to get that fight. Once there is a title on the line, everyone comes out of the woodwork. Jose Aldo, Ricardo Lamas, Cub Swanson, and Brian Ortega all wanted to leave their match-ups they were booked in for a chance at Max Holloway’s featherweight title. At the end of the day, it ended up being the former king of the division. Early in the negotiations, Holloway’s manager leaked some of the name ideas, but now he’s just revealed what great lengths Holloway was going to go to stay on the card. “[Darren Elkins was considered as a replacement and] the UFC wasn’t too excited about that. [Max Holloway] said he would fight [Tony] Ferguson, he talked about [Donald] ‘Cowboy’ [Cerrone], going up to 155 and doing whatever. We thought that we were going to get Cub [Swanson]. but it ended up being [Jose] Aldo. Max just calmly said, ‘It is what it is, and let’s do it.’ He signed the bout contract within minutes.”
