Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone is Still Keen on a Fight with Robbie Lawler: It Would Be "a Hell of a Fight"

This Saturday, on the main card of the universally anticipated UFC 205, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone will look to move to 4-0 as a welterweight with a win over highly-regarded contender Kelvin Gastelum. The fight stands out as one of the most anticipated features of the event. Gastelum is not, however, the man Cowboy was originally supposed to face. Instead, Cowboy was initially expected to mix it up with a fellow fan favorite in Robbie Lawler in a fight that seemed like a surefire recipe for ultraviolence. Unfortunately, Lawler was forced to withdraw from this fight just days after it was announced in a grim twist that left fight fans wiping tears from their eyes. The former welterweight champ called Cowboy to break the bad news personally.

Donald Cerrone may have spent most of his UFC career as a top ranked lightweight, however Cerrone has recently been on a tear of the UFC’s welterweight division as he has gone 3-0 over the course of 2016. In his welterweight debut, Cerrone submitted Alex ‘Cowboy’ Oliveira before making it 2-0 when he became the first man to TKO Patrick Cote during ‘UFC Fight Night: Ottawa’. Most recently, Cerrone stepped into the Octagon against Rick Story at UFC 202 back in August, delivering a spectacular highlight reel TKO to earn himself the #6 ranking on the UFC’s official rankings.

Featherweight great Jose Aldo has asked to be released from his UFC contract so he can leave the sport altogether. Top contenders Khabib Nurmagomedov and Julianna Peña have both recently flirted with UFC departures after being stiffed on title shots. Featherweight veteran Tatsuya Kawajiri has asked to be released from his contract. The list goes on and on.

With the UFC’s inaugural event at the Madison Square Garden, UFC 205, rapidly approaching on November 12th, fight fans have been anxiously awaiting announcements regarding fights which will take place on the card. The first bout announced by the UFC for the historic card was Robbie Lawler vs. Donald Cerrone. While MMA fans were quick to celebrate the announcement, it was revealed that Lawler had backed out of the fight for fear of returning to action too quickly following his UFC 201 KO loss to Tyron Woodley.

While Donald Cerrone is undoubtably one of the top lightweights on the UFC roster, ‘Cowboy’ has left MMA fans stunned when he steps into the Octagon at welterweight. At 6 feet tall, and with a 73 inch reach, Cowboy certainly isn’t the biggest welterweight on the roster, however time and time again he has proven that his technique makes him a welterweight to be feared.

This past Saturday, UFC veteran Donald Cerrone stepped into the Octagon to fight welterweight Rick Story in what was the final fight of his UFC contract. After putting on arguably the best performance of his career, Cerrone stated that he planned on re-signing with the promotion. Now, news has surfaced via MMAJunkie that Cerrone has officially signed an 8-fight deal with the UFC, and according to Brett Okamoto is “ready to continue success” with the promotion.
