Concussion could delay Eddie Alvarez vs. Dustin Poirier II
This past weekend at UFC 211, former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez and top ranked lightweight Dustin Poirier stepped into the Octagon for an extremely pivotal showdown.
The fight started out rather one sided as Alvarez looked extremely hesitant to throw in the early minutes of the fight. After being tagged and rocked by a big punch from Poirier, Alvarez came alive and not only survived the onslaught, but went as far as to rock Poirier in the second round. Unfortunately, three illegal knees from the former champ dropped Poirier, and resulted in referee Herb Dean calling the fight a no contest.
While the two men traded barbs on Twitter while discussing a rematch, Poirier’s manager Robert Roveta revealed to MMAFighting that Poirier sustained a concussion in the fight. While Roveta revealed that Poirier’s team was taking the concussion symptoms “very seriously” no timetable was given for when exactly the rematch could take place.
As mentioned previously, this comes on the heels of both men trading barbs on social media regarding when the rematch should be scheduled:

Of course Poirier is currently medically suspended until June 28th per the UFC 211 medical suspensions. With that being said, given the fact that ‘The Diamond’ sustained a concussion in the fight, he could be out for much longer depending on the severity of his symptoms.
Stay tuned for updates as they become available.
