Dustin Poirier plans to appeal the no-contest ruling from his UFC 211 fight with Eddie Alvarez

Perennial UFC lightweight contender Dustin Poirier went to war with former division title holder Eddie Alvarez in the featured preliminary bout of yesterday’s UFC 211 fight card in Dallas, Texas.

The fights opening round was a back and forth affair, with Poirier seemingly getting off the better strikes in round one.

Then early on in round number two, Poirier was able to catch Alvarez with a beautiful left hand which had Eddie in all sorts of trouble.

From there, “The Diamond” emptied his arsenal by throwing a barrage of punches and kicks on the wounded former champion.

With that said, the always tough Alvarez refused to go down and eventually was able to catch Dustin with a big punch of his own that seemed to swing the tide in his favor.

After putting together a good combination, Alvarez shot in and scored a takedown on Poirier. Dustin immediately scrambled in an attempt to get back up to his feet and that is when Eddie connected with a pair of knees, the second of which was definitely illegal.

Referee Herb Dean stepped in and called a stop to the action after the second unintentional illegal strike found a home on Dustin’s face. After being looked at by the doctors in attendance, Poirier was deemed unfit to continue and the bout was ruled a no-contest.

With that said, many fans and analysts believed that Eddie Alvarez should have been disqualified for the illegal knee, which would have given Poirier the decision victory (and a win bonus).

Last night Poirier took to Twitter where he weighed in on the fights controversial ending.

Today, Ariel Helwani announced on Twitter that Poirier’s team plans on appealing yesterday’s no-contest ruling.

According to his team, @DustinPoirier will be appealing yesterday's NC contest ruling w/ the TX commission. They believe it should be a DQ.
