Dustin Poirier has hinted at retiring from mixed martial arts whilst also playing down the idea of fighting Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz. Ever since his defeat to Charles Oliveira at UFC 269, questions have been circulating across the MMA sphere regarding the future of Dustin Poirier. While he’s quite clearly still an elite lightweight, the talk of him getting straight back into the Octagon against Nate Diaz appears to have died down.

According to Islam Makhachev, Dustin Poiriers’ move to welterweight is only because he won’t ever be a lightweight champion. Poirier (28-7 MMA) lost to Charles Oliveira (32-8 MMA) at UFC 269 in December 2021, failing to earn the desired lightweight belt. It was Poiriers’ second attempt to gain the title, his first attempt was back in 2019 at UFC 242, in Abu Dhabi, when he lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov (29-0 MMA).

A recent report from SBJ has indicated that UFC 269 managed to hit over 500,000 pay-per-view buys last month. In the final PPV of the year for the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the promotion went all out. They put on a blockbuster card stacked from head to toe with talent, and that was particularly true for the main event and co-main event of the evening.

Back at UFC 269, Charles Oliveira submitted Dustin Poirier to successfully retain his UFC lightweight championship. The back and forth first round was followed by an emphatic second round performance from “Do Bronx”, leaving Poirier to wonder what’s next for him in the UFC.
