At UFC 236, streaking UFC lightweight contender Dustin Poirier will finally fight for UFC gold, as he’s set to battle featherweight champion Max Holloway for the interim lightweight belt. Generally speaking, when a fighter wins an interim title, the expectation is that they are guaranteed a crack at the undisputed champion thereafter. In Poirier’s case that would mean a fight with undisputed champ Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Dustin Poirier and Nate Diaz were supposed to fight at UFC 230 in November. Unfortunately, Poirier ultimately withdrew from the fight with an injured hip — although he recently divulged there may have been more to the story. Speaking with ESPN on Monday, Dustin Poirier was asked what he’d say to Nate Diaz if given the opportunity. The top lightweight contender, who battles Max Holloway for interim gold at UFC 236 on April 13, did not hold back.

UFC 236, which goes down on April 13 inside the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, is already coming together nicely. Earlier this month, we learned that the card will feature an interim middleweight title fight between top contenders Kelvin Gastelum and Israel Adesanya, and this weekend, we learned that it will also include an interim lightweight title fight between streaking contender Dustin Poirier and reigning featherweight champ Max Holloway. If things go according to plan, it will be the first card in UFC history to feature two interim title fights.

At least, that’s what we thought. Responding to a fan on Twitter on Sunday afternoon, Dustin Poirier claimed that, by the time he withdrew from the card with a hip injury, Nate Diaz had already dropped out of the matchup himself.
